His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 22 What She Remembers

After forcing his way into Cecily’s home abroad, Gareth found himself caught up in a legal case.

As soon as the Hollises heard, they sent their legal team to Greyhaven. It took local lawyers and a great deal of money to secure the release of the heir in whom they’d once placed such high hopes.

His mother rushed over from home and could barely recognize him.

“Gareth, my poor boy. What you’ve been through…”

When he finally stepped outside again, his hair was unkempt and his face covered in stubble. Nothing remained of his former polished elegance.

He stood despondently among the lawyers, his eyes empty. His mother held him and wept, but he felt nothing.

The person he wanted to see most hadn’t come.

He looked up in disappointment and spotted a familiar man he despised.

Benedict approached, perfectly calm.

“Shall we find somewhere to sit? Have a coffee?”

Gareth’s mother turned toward the unfamiliar young man, assuming he was a friend.

“He’s not feeling well. Perhaps another time…”

“I’ll go,” Gareth interrupted.

Unable to change his mind, she returned to the hotel alone.

The two men sat in a nearby café. Gareth took a sip and frowned slightly.

He still preferred the tea he drank back home.

Noticing his discomfort, Benedict gave a faint smile.

“You don’t like coffee? You and Cecily really weren’t suited to each other. She loves it. We practically lived on it when we were writing papers at university.”

“Tea does the same thing,” Gareth said flatly.

Benedict nodded.

“Tea’s fine, too. There’s no need to decide which is better. It’s a matter of taste.”

Gareth looked at him resentfully. “What are you getting at? Are you here to gloat because Cecily likes you better now?”

Benedict took an unhurried sip.

“At least I didn’t sleep with Cecily’s best friend and help that woman deceive her. She has no reason not to like me.”

Gareth choked on a response, a vein standing out at his temple.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. How long have you even known her?”

“Eight years,” Benedict interrupted, still calm. “If her mother hadn’t forced her home after graduation for an arranged match, we might have school–age children by now.”

Gareth couldn’t speak. Finally, he managed, “In your dreams.”

Benedict looked almost amused.

“You made your choices. Now you get to live with them. Cecily cut you out because of what you did to her. I honestly don’t understand what you think you have to be angry about.”

He called the server and paid, then stood, looking down at Gareth.

“I came to tell you one thing. She still has nightmares because of you. Have enough decency to stay away. Stop interfering with her life.”

Gareth’s hand shook around his cup, spilling warm coffee.

“Is that all I am to her? A nightmare?”

The choked whisper made Benedict hesitate for a moment, but he kept walking.

Behind him, Gareth collapsed over the table, buried his face in his arms, and shook with sobs.
