His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 16 No More Chances

Caught off guard, Gareth stumbled back several steps before regaining his balance.

He didn’t get angry.

“It’s been a long time, Cecily.

“Are you still angry about what happened? I’m sorry.”

She put down her cake and looked at him coldly.

“Why aren’t you at home with Daphne? What do you want with me?”

There was no warmth in her eyes. She looked at him as though he were a stranger.

His heart sank. He hurriedly pulled a folded copy of the divorce decree from his pocket and pressed it into her hand.

“I know I hurt you with Daphne. The baby is gone, and we’ve divorced.

“I’ve come to my senses. I’ll never see her again. Forgive me, Cecily. Let’s go home, have our wedding, and start over.”

She gave a disbelieving laugh.

“After everything you did, you still have the nerve to ask me to forgive you? Do you even know what shame is?”

The Cecily he remembered had been gentle and playful. This harsh, furious woman was so unfamiliar that she frightened him.

He didn’t know how to respond. “I know I was wrong. After all our years together, won’t you give me one chance to make it right?”

His pleading left her unmoved.

“You brought us here, Gareth. All of this is your doing. You want me back? I can’t even look at you without seeing you having sex with Daphne in that car. Or remembering how you pushed me off that platform without a second thought.

“Our families introduced us, but you knew my feelings were real. You told me you wanted more than a business alliance, too. We were honest with each other once. So tell me, Gareth. How did we end up here?”

He had no answer.

His lips pressed tightly together. He couldn’t meet her searching gaze.

Cecily drew a deep breath and forced back the tears gathering in her eyes.

“We did love each other once. Even if it’s over, we can leave each other a little dignity.

“I’m not taking you back. I don’t want to see you. Don’t come looking for me again.”

His fists clenched. He stared at her with reddened eyes, unable to accept how final she sounded.

“Don’t you feel anything for me anymore?”

She nodded, more certain than he had ever heard her.

“The night of our anniversary, when I saw you holding Daphne in the rain, I knew there was no coming back from it.”

Panicking, he reached for an excuse.

“It wasn’t what you think. Daphne and I just got carried away…”

Cecily handed back the divorce decree and cut him off.

“I don’t care what happened between you. You don’t need to tell me.”

As she moved past him, Gareth caught her, his eyes red.

“Please, Cecily. One more chance. I promise…”

He didn’t finish. A figure rushed toward him, and a punch knocked him to the

floor.

Benedict pulled Cecily behind him and glared at Gareth.

“Who are you? What makes you think you can barge into

my

house?”

Gareth got up and wiped the blood from his mouth. “I’m Cecily’s fiancé.”

Her eyes widened. She quickly waved a hand at Benedict in denial.

“Former fiancé.”

A slight smile curved Benedict’s mouth, as though he’d heard something very pleasing.

He turned back to Gareth.

“You heard her. You have one minute to leave on your own. Otherwise, I’m calling the police and reporting you for refusing to leave my home.”
