His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 13 Notes Between The Pages

Daphne lost the baby. Gareth felt no grief.

He neglected the company and hid at Rosemere, touching the things Cecily had left behind, aching for what was gone.

He hadn’t slept properly in a long time.

One image from the recording kept returning like a nightmare: Cecily staring at him as he kissed Daphne in the rain.

He didn’t know whether she’d cried afterward, but he could imagine the pain and hatred she must have felt. Why else would she have canceled their wedding so decisively?

Whenever he thought of it, guilt overwhelmed him.

He told himself it wasn’t that he’d stopped loving Cecily. Daphne had led him astray. If he’d known how cruel she really was, he would never have stayed involved with her this long.

Unable to sleep, he went to the study to look for one of the mystery novels Cecily liked.

As he pulled a book from the shelf, a note slipped out.

“Gareth, those imported roses you gave me are beautiful. I think I love you even

more.”

His fingers shook. He quickly opened another book beside it, and another note fell

out.

“Whoever finds this is in luck. What’s your wish, Gareth? I’ll make it come true.”

“I love the way you look at me. I’ll always love you.”

Notes fluttered from the books one after another. Clutching them, Gareth leaned helplessly against the shelves and buried his head in his arms, nearly consumed by

regret.

She was so good to me. She cared so much. How did I lose her?

In Greyhaven, dark clouds threatened to swallow the city.

Benedict stood at the window, looking out at the rain–soaked garden without seeming to see it. His expression was darker than the weather.

A friend’s voice came from the phone on speaker.

“…We’d already bought cards and written out checks for the wedding. Then, out of nowhere, Gareth and Cecily split up.

“Later, I heard someone had seen them fighting at the hospital. He humiliated her in public, and he had another woman with him. Apparently, she was pregnant.

“Their families are still at each other’s throats. Cecily’s mother must have decided there was no saving the business relationship, because she used this to squeeze a fortune out of the Hollises. Cecily was getting it from both sides. I suppose Greyhaven was the only place she had left to go.”

Benedict’s chest felt tight. At last, he understood why Cecily had thanked him so earnestly.

He remembered her as a student in Greyhaven. Even during the endless, miserable rainy season, she had been bright and full of life, impossible to miss in any crowd.

He had never imagined anyone could bury that brightness so completely. After ending the call, he checked his watch. It was only seven in the morning.

He drove out toward Cecily’s neighborhood.

He didn’t know exactly why he was going. He simply needed to see her. He hadn’t expected to find her, but then he spotted a familiar figure outside a café.

Cecily sat at a round table beneath the awning, leisurely leafing through a fashion magazine. A warm cappuccino stood beside her.

When someone took the seat opposite without asking, she looked up. Her face brightened.

“Benedict? What are you doing here?”

He cleared his throat, scrambling for an excuse.

“Nothing much. Just felt like having breakfast here.”

Cecily gave him a puzzled look.

He crossed half the city for breakfast?

She let it go and handed him the menu. “Order whatever you like. My treat.”

He accepted without fuss and ordered fried eggs and waffles. They shared breakfast in the faint chill of the morning.

“A few classmates visiting from home wanted to have a get–together. We agreed to hold it at my place. I’ve been too busy until now, but things have eased up. should come.”

Cecily thought it over. There was no reason to refuse.

“I’d love to. Do you need any help?”

He smiled.

“They’ve asked for a few of my specialties. Come early and taste everything for me.”

That’s all I have to do?

It had been ages since she’d enjoyed a proper home–cooked meal. She accepted immediately.

“I’ll be there. On time, I promise.”
