After they left, I snuck out and went to my mom’s grave at Oakridge Memorial Cemetery.

After Mom died, I was sent to a group home.

Sophie Ellis was the only friend I had there.

I still remembered how, when no one else would talk to me, she was the only one willing to speak to me.

When other kids bullied me, she’d secretly save her extra food for me.

Later, she brought her best friend Logan Vance into my life.

I thanked God countless times for giving me the best friend and the best boyfriend a girl could ask for.

That day, I sat in front of the cold headstone from dusk until dawn.

I still had no answers.

Right before sunrise, Logan found me.

“Evelyn Quinn, you’ve started running away from home now? Do you even realize—”

He didn’t finish, but I could hear the panic in his voice.

He handed me a woman’s jacket, faintly scented with gardenias—Sophie’s favorite.

I stared at the oversized coat and felt my nose sting.

Their feelings for each other weren’t hard to spot.

Over the past few years, bigger-sized items had slowly appeared around the house.

Clothes, shoes, perfume, jewelry.

Even the wedding band on my finger.

I used to think he was just oblivious.

Now I realized every “mistake” had been filled with his love for Sophie.

I didn’t say a word. I simply pulled off the ring and handed it back to him along with the jacket.

“I don’t need these anymore.”

Logan’s face darkened instantly. His last bit of patience vanished.

“Evelyn Quinn! How long are you going to keep throwing these tantrums?”

“You just want me and Sophie revolving around you, don’t you?”

I looked up at him, eyes stinging.

“I’m not throwing a tantrum.”

“I just—”

I wanted to say I was trying to set them free.

But he had already run out of patience.

“Evelyn. Whatever. Do what you want.”

He turned and walked away, leaving me there alone.

The cold wind cut through my thin clothes. I curled my lips in a self-mocking smile.

This time, he didn’t even notice I was barefoot.

I walked down the mountain with nothing on my feet.

My soles were bleeding by the time I finally reached home.

In the dark hallway, I heard familiar voices.

It was Logan and Sophie.

“Logan, we can’t!”

“Evie is my best friend. I can’t betray her.”

Sophie’s voice was thick with tears, filled with restrained regret.

Logan’s eyes were red with heartache, his tone wild.

“Sophie, I want you by my side forever. I want a baby that’s ours!”

“We can tell Evie. She’s so kind—she’ll forgive us. She’ll even bless us!”

Slap!

The sharp sound of Sophie’s slap echoed through the hallway.

“Logan, calm down.”

But she regretted it the moment her hand landed.

“Logan, let’s make tonight our final goodbye, okay?”

“After tonight, we won’t see each other again.”

She rose on her toes and kissed him through her tears.

I hid in the shadows and watched them slip into our apartment with practiced ease.

Through the cracked door, I saw Sophie’s flushed face as she looked up.

“What if Evie comes back?”

Logan panted, his voice thick with desire.

“She won’t. I left her at the cemetery. There are no cars this early—she can’t get back.”

“I’ll go pick her up after we’re done.”

The door clicked shut.

From where I stood, I caught a glimpse of the number above Logan’s head.

It had dropped to 10.

My heart sank into an abyss, shattered beyond repair.

I bit down hard on my lip, letting the taste of blood spread in my mouth.

In the end, I still dialed Sophie’s number.

She picked up as quickly as she always did.

But her voice came out breathless.

“Evie… where are you? I’m so worried about you…”

In the background, I could hear Logan’s low groan of release.

I couldn’t hold it back anymore. I dry-heaved violently.

I threw up until my whole body felt empty, then stumbled away.

I don’t know how far I walked that night.

I only know that when I finally looked up, the sky was completely dark.

Suddenly, I realized several shady guys were following me.

Their stares made my skin crawl.

I quickened my pace. They sped up too. Their footsteps echoed loudly in the empty alley.

Fear swallowed me whole. My hands shook so badly I could barely hold my phone.

I called Logan without thinking.

Finally, the call connected.

Logan’s voice sounded lazy and irritated.

“What do you want now, Evelyn? You’re really starting to piss me off!”

I didn’t have time to care. My voice trembled with terror.

“I’m being followed. I’m in—”

He cut me off harshly.

“Enough! Evelyn, can you stop with the drama? First you run away, now you’re claiming someone’s following you?”

“Is making up these lies fun for you? I’m exhausted!”

Tears poured down my face. I begged desperately into the phone.

“Logan! Don’t hang up! I’m telling the truth! Please, come save me—”

Beep. Beep.

The line went dead.

When I tried calling again, it went straight to voicemail.

Despair crashed over me like a tidal wave.

I collapsed onto the ground.

The footsteps grew closer. My vision started to blur.

In the end, I couldn’t hear anything at all.
