The next morning, I walked into Felix’s office with a stack of documents for him to sign.

My resignation letter was on top.

“You know how this works. Open every document to the signature page.”

“You’ve worked for me for three years. Do I really need to repeat something this basic?”

Beside him, Tanya quickly nudged his arm.

Her voice came out soft and teasing.

“Felix, don’t be so harsh. You’re scaring Olivia.”

I glanced at her desk out of habit.

That used to be my desk.

Then Felix had said, “Tanya is your best friend, and she wants to learn.”

“I’ll keep her close and train her myself. You can move to the main floor.”

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat.

“Sorry, Felix. I didn’t sleep well last night, so I—”

His palm struck the polished desk.

“I don’t want excuses.”

“One more mistake like this, and you can request a demotion. Carter Group has standards.”

He paused.

“And during office hours, address me by my title.”

Quietly, I opened every document to the correct page and watched him sign them one by one.

He signed the resignation letter without reading the heading.

My voice was so steady it surprised even me.

“Understood.”

“Mr. Carter.”

Halfway through the exit process, the entire office was buzzing.

Monica Parker from Human Resources came over with a cup of coffee.

“Olivia, you’re really leaving?”

“Carter Group is a great company. Are you sure you want to walk away?”

I smiled.

“It’s not that I want to leave.”

“It’s that I can’t stay.”

Monica paused.

“Really? We all thought you were about to get a raise.”

“I mean, the intern you recommended? Mr. Carter is crazy about her.”

“People are saying they might already be together.”

Felix and I had dated for three years.

He refused to let us go public at work because he said it would look unprofessional.

Tanya had only been at Carter Group for six months.

And the rumors were already everywhere.

I gave a small laugh.

“Monica, whatever is happening between them is none of my concern.”

I submitted the exit paperwork and hired a courier to collect everything from my office.

Then I looked at the empty desk one last time.

My chest felt strangely hollow too.

But it didn’t hurt as much as I had expected.

Ethan’s office had already transferred the five-hundred-thousand-dollar signing bonus.

Someone had also delivered the keys to the oceanfront condo.

Three years of my twenties.

At least I had enough value left to start over.

Then Felix texted me.

It was the private restaurant I had wanted to try for months.

But I had no appetite anymore.
