His Automated Reply Cost Him His Wife Chapter 15

With a cold, steady expression, I pried his fingers off me one by one. Those hands, once so warm and powerful, now felt sticky and desperate.

My gaze was an icy scalpel, scraping across his face.

Ethan stiffened, pierced by the disgust in my eyes.

In the instant he froze, loosening his grip, I shoved him away.

“You’re pathetic.”

Then I swiped my key card and walked into the climate-controlled lobby, shutting him and the Chicago blizzard outside.

All day, Ethan stood in the storm like a bizarre statue.

My newer colleagues didn’t know him. They gathered by the floor-to-ceiling windows in the break room, looking down at the man standing rigid in the snow.

“God, who is that guy? Why is he just standing out there shivering?”

“It’s below freezing. If that lunatic dies outside our building, we’re going to have a problem.”

“I’ve never seen him before, but he’s kind of handsome. Is he some dumped boyfriend acting out a bad romantic movie?”

My colleagues chattered, holding their coffees.

I didn’t join them. I spent the day in a project review on the second floor and didn’t look out the window once.

At five in the evening, I packed my things and went downstairs. Ethan was still there.

But he could no longer stand.

He was leaning against a lamppost, his face having gone from deathly pale to a bluish purple. His lips were dark, and his whole body was shaking violently.

When he saw me, he tried to open his mouth, but only broken, hoarse sounds came out.

Then his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the snow-covered steps like a felled tree.
