I woke up and realized I was inside a story I had read before.

And before I knew it, I had fallen hopelessly in love with Alistair Sterling, my childhood sweetheart.

“No. We’re not going.”

Our eyes met.

Someone pointed at me excitedly and asked him, “Alistair, even if you’ve forgotten all of us, you should at least remember Celestine, right?”

“You two grew up together. You even said you’d be together forever.”

The focus in the room shifted to me.

He looked at me but didn’t say whether he remembered or not.

After a brief silence, he simply repeated my name. “Celestine.”

Everyone seemed to get it immediately.

They laughed it off to ease the tension, then tried to comfort me.

“Celestine, he hit his head pretty badly. He forgot all of us.”

“But the doctors said there’s still a chance he could recover… and even if he doesn’t, at least he made it back safely. That’s what matters.”

Their words came gently, as if they were afraid it might upset me.

Then, as if trying to close the distance between us, they started eagerly recounting our shared past to him.

“When you disappeared at sea, Celestine took it harder than anyone.”

“She was the only one who believed you were still alive—the one who never stopped searching for you.”

“Honestly, fate is cruel. If not for that accident, you two would’ve been married by now.”

That much was true.

Our family-arranged engagement had been set since we were children.

Before he fell into the sea, we had already chosen a wedding date.

But the wedding never came. Instead, he vanished silently into the ocean.

The last thing he said to me still lingered in my mind.

“Celestine, I can’t wait for our wedding.”

Now, after so many years, those words only stirred up a quiet ache.

Holding my glass, I smiled at him, playing along with the reunion everyone had orchestrated.

“Welcome home.”

But when he looked at me, his words were completely different.

“I didn’t come back to go through with the engagement.”

“I’m in love with someone else.”

I knew. I had known it the moment in my last life, after he’d vanished into the sea.
