Her Unborn Baby’s Voice Chapter 04

Her Unborn Baby’s Voice Chapter 04

The agony and blood loss dragged me into unconsciousness before the ambulance ride was even over. It

felt as though I had struggled for ages in an endless abyss of darkness before finally clawing my way

back to awareness.

The sharp, sterile smell of disinfectant forced its way into my nose. Above me, a white ceiling swayed in

and out of focus.

I tried to move, only to realize my body was tightly wrapped in thick bandages. A piercing pain shot

through my knee and leg wounds. Every breath tugged at the injuries in my chest, a brutal reminder of the nightmare I had just endured.

“Jerry! You’re awake?”

A familiar voice, edged with barely concealed urgency, cut through the haze and pulled me fully back to

reality. With great effort, I turned my stiff neck and saw Jane Higgins‘ face, drawn tight with worry.

She had been my classmate in college. Now she worked in the Technical Division of the Confidential

Bureau, a different department from Mary’s Intelligence Operations Division.

She reached out, as if to check my injuries, but hesitated midway, afraid of causing me more pain.

“Mm…”

My throat felt like it was on fire. The sound that came out was hoarse, almost unrecognizable.

Jane immediately understood. She hurried to fetch a cotton swab, dipped it in water, and gently

moistened my cracked lips.

The faint coolness brought a brief, precious relief.

“Don’t try to talk,” she said softly. “You’re badly injured. You’ve lost too much blood. You need rest.”

Her eyes brimmed with concern, almost spilling over.

But I couldn’t wait. Summoning what little strength I had left, I lifted my heavy arm and grabbed her

wrist.

“Mary… and Brandon…”

Each word scraped through my throat like a rusted blade, leaving a burning trail behind.

Jane’s expression darkened instantly, anger flaring in her eyes.

“They’ve both been taken into custody. They’re being held in a special interrogation room at the Bureau under strict guard.”

She paused, then added, her tone weighted with gravity and a faint trace of grim satisfaction.

“Before you passed out, you were clutching that miniature recording device you gave me. The contents

are clear and complete. It’s already been submitted to the disciplinary committee as key evidence.”

I slowly released her wrist. The massive weight in my chest lifted halfway, though the pain in my body

remained all too real.

In this second life, my gamble had paid off. The recording device I had prepared in advance had faithfully

captured everything that happened in that interrogation room. Their illegal coercion, their brutal

violence, and even that absurd accusation based on a so–called “voice.” Nothing had escaped exposure.

Jane looked at my pale face, her expression complicated.

“When I heard what they did to you in that recording… those conversations…” She clenched her fists, her

nails digging deep into her palms. “I almost rushed in there…”

She didn’t finish, but the rise and fall of her chest betrayed the storm of emotions within her.

I understood. The pain of being betrayed and hurt by the person you trusted most… I had already endured

it once in my previous life.

This time, it was their turn to pay the price.
