Her New Life, His Eternal Pain Chapter 13

Her New Life, His Eternal Pain Chapter 13 Dead Giveaway

Liam shouted after Samuel, who was walking away with the girl in his arms. “Neither of you is wearing a patient bracelet! Samuel, who are you really here to see?”

Samuel’s footsteps faltered-a tiny hesitation, barely a beat. He didn’t turn around. “None of your business.”

Liam’s eyes went wide. His dead heart, the one he’d been sure had stopped beating six years ago, started hammering in his chest.

A crazy, impossible thought exploded in his head. He could feel his pulse in his throat, his temples, his fingertips.

He pulled out his phone with shaking hands and called his secretary. “I need every patient file in this hospital. Now.”

His voice cracked on the last word.

The files arrived within minutes. He scrolled. Page after page. Names and faces blurring past.

Then-he saw her.

Fiona Foster.

Room 412. Admitted two weeks ago.

She was alive.

On the other side of the hospital, Samuel held Lily tight, patting her back, his hand trembling just slightly.

“That man is a monster. If you ever see him again, you run, okay? Run as fast as you can.”

Lily’s eyes were red, tears still wet on her cheeks. Her breath came in little hitches. “I just wanted to buy Mommy donuts. She was crying in her sleep because it hurt. But donuts always make her smile. Daddy, I didn’t mean to see him…”

Samuel’s heart cracked. He kissed her cheek, his lips pressing gently. “Daddy knows. Daddy just doesn’t want the monster to snatch my baby girl away. If that happened, Mommy and Daddy would be so sad they’d never stop crying.”

Lily nodded hard, her little chin wobbling, and buried her face in his neck. Her voice was muffled. “Lily will never leave Mommy and Daddy’s side again. Promise.”

Samuel hugged her tighter, but his mind was racing.

He knew Liam was suspicious. The man was probably already digging through records, making calls. It wouldn’t be long before the truth came out.

But the best surgeon for Fiona’s procedure wasn’t available for two more weeks.

Two weeks was plenty of time for Liam to find everything.

Samuel looked at the closed door of Fiona’s room and made his decision. He nodded once, jaw tight.

Lily burst into Fiona’s room like a tiny tornado and climbed onto the bed. She pulled a slightly squashed donut from her pocket, her eyes sparkling through the last of her tears.

“Mommy, you have to smile when you eat it, okay? That’s the rule!”

Fiona’s heart melted. She nuzzled Lily’s neck, breathing in that sweet little-kid smell. “As long as Lily is with Mommy, Mommy smiles every single day.”

“But Mommy’s gonna have surgery. I won’t see you for a long time.” Lily’s voice dropped, her lower lip pushing out.

Fiona kissed her soft cheek, her eyes stinging. “Mommy will get better fast. I promise. Cross my heart.”

Lily patted Fiona’s head like a tiny adult, her hand small and warm. “Don’t be sad. Daddy says after the surgery, you’ll be all better. Then Lily will stay with you forever and ever.”

Fiona looked at her daughter’s serious little face and laughed-a real laugh, from somewhere deep. “Okay. sweetheart. Mommy promises.”

Later, alone, Fiona sat by the window and thought about how stupid she’d been.

Chasing death. Pushing away the one person who’d never left her side. Ignoring everything Samuel had done.

She was grateful he’d never given up.

Grateful for Lily.

Those two had lit up her dark world and given her a reason to breathe again.

And Selene… the guilt had faded, somehow. It still ached, but it was a dull ache now, not a knife in the gut.

Selene would never have blamed her. That wasn’t who Selene was.

Selene had told her to run. Screamed it, actually. “Fiona, run! Go!” She’d wanted Fiona to live. That was the kind of person Selene was.

Fiona had just been too lost in survivor’s guilt to see it.

Now, after being reborn-after dying and coming back-the weight was lifting.

She didn’t love Liam anymore. Didn’t fear him. If he showed up right now demanding her life, she wouldn’t give it to him.

She was going to live. For herself. For Selene. For Samuel and Lily.

Her hand rested on her chest, feeling her heartbeat.

I’m staying, she told herself. I’m not going anywhere.

A few days before the surgery, Samuel took Lily to a daycare center.

First time leaving her parents. Lily wasn’t scared. She made little fists and pumped them in the air.

“Mommy, be brave! Lily will wait for you to come back victorious!”

Fiona kissed her cheek, breathing her in one last time. “After surgery, we’ll go to the zoo.”

“No! Haunted house!” Lily pouted, stomping her foot.

“Fine, fine. Haunted house.” Fiona laughed and waved as Samuel carried her out. “Drive safe.”

She watched them go, then closed the door and leaned against it.

She was scared. More than she let on. Her hands were cold, her stomach full of knots.

But thinking of Lily’s chubby face and Samuel’s steady hands, the fear faded. Only one thing remained.

I have to live.
