Nora collapsed on the ground, drooling.

The person who’d been trying to kill me was gone. Just a broken thing lying there.

She mumbled about familial bonds and tasks. When the guards let go, she started rolling on the

floor, kowtowing to the air.

Police arrived soon.

The knife, the vial, the surveillance footage, her uniform–all of it became evidence.

Charges stacked high: attempted homicide, intentional poisoning, defamation, and public

incitement. Tears and hollow apologies wouldn’t buy her freedom this time.

Richard showed up too.

He came fast–not because he cared, but because he was afraid of being dragged down.

He stood at the roof entrance, saw Nora in that state, and didn’t even bother pretending. “She’s

crazy. I don’t know her. She’s nothing to me.”

Nora heard his voice and looked up. “Dad…”

Richard stepped back. “Don’t call me that. You made your own bed. I didn’t tell you to kill anyone.”

Nora stared at him. Then she screamed. “It was you! You said if I stole Anna’s place, we could get

back into the Langley house! You told me to cozy up to Vivian!”

Richard’s face drained. “She’s lying! Officer, she’s insane–you can’t believe her!”

Mom walked over. Her secretary handed her a thick file. She gave it to the police.

“Supplemental evidence on Richard Whitmore’s commercial fraud.”

Richard’s face went pale.

He dropped to his knees. “Vivian! We were married. Think about Anna. I’m her real father.”

I crouched nearby and picked up my chip bag. It had dust on it now. Couldn’t be saved.

I tossed it in the trash and looked back at Richard.

“I don’t have a father.”

He froze.

I thought for another moment and added, “But I have a mom.”

Something in Mom’s cold expression softened.

She came over and touched my head gently.

Richard kept begging. He said he’d held me when I was a baby. That blood couldn’t be cut. That I

was being ungrateful.

I thought about it very seriously.

I didn’t remember.

It didn’t matter.

The law enforcement officers handcuffed Richard. Nora was hoisted by another set of police.

They met in the hallway.

Richard cursed Nora first, spewing insults and calling her a worthless burden. Nora grinned at him.

The elevator went down. Mom turned to me, “Were you scared?”
