At dusk, I took Rory to the clan chief and had our names struck from the clan rolls.

From that moment on, the clan no longer counted Winter and Rory among its own.

On our way home, Toby’s mother hurried over and stopped me.

“Toby told me you’re leaving. Is that true? This is so sudden. Everything was fine yesterday, and you said you were going to talk to Ronan.”

“Did the two of you have a fight?”

I forced a smile and shook my head.

“No. I just realized we weren’t right for each other.”

“Rather than wait until my three years are up and be handed over to some male shifter I’ve never met, I’d rather leave with Rory.”

Toby’s mother sighed sympathetically.

“You’ve had such bad luck, Winter. After your bonded mate died, you raised your cub alone for three years. Then, just when it finally seemed like you and Ronan were getting close…”

Before she could finish, laughter drifted over from the distance.

I turned toward the sound without thinking.

In the gathering dusk, Ronan stood beside the bonfire, laughing with a young female. The young female smiled so brightly that her eyes crinkled, while the firelight made Ronan’s feline gaze look almost tender.

As though sensing my stare, he turned his head.

Our eyes met across the distance.

He paused, but instead of pulling away, he deliberately leaned closer to the female.

She blushed and gave him a light push, but she did not step back.

Slowly, their lips met, and neither of them seemed willing to pull away.

Toby’s mother saw them too. Her shock immediately turned to anger.

“That Ronan…”

“It’s fine.”

I raised a hand to stop her, then bent down and called to Rory, who was still playing with Toby.

“Rory, it’s time to go.”

Rory reluctantly said goodbye to Toby, then ran over to me and instinctively glanced in the direction I had been looking.
