He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 41

Rhett finally saw her again.

The regret, fear, and frantic longing that had been crushing him for months burst forth the moment he saw her clearly.

The light in his eyes went out, replaced by large tears that rolled down his sunken cheeks and soaked the pillow. A Walker man, a proud Texan, was crying like a child abandoned by the world.

Ellie just stood there, quietly looking at the broken man on the bed.

No old love rekindled in her heart.

No forgiveness, either.

Only a faint sorrow, as if mourning something that had died long ago.

She knew that between them, there could be nothing.

The only reason she was here now was a lingering, vestigial sense of responsibility from a marriage that no longer existed.

She didn’t go to him. Instead, she took the diagnosis report from Cole’s hand.

She flipped through it, page by page, her expression frighteningly calm. Then, under Rhett’s pleading gaze, she took out her phone, scanned the document, and sent it to his personal assistant. The email was brief.

*Forward this to Mr. and Mrs. Walker.*

Only after she had done all this did she finally turn her gaze back to the man on the bed.

“Do you know your condition?” Her voice held no warmth.

Rhett nodded with difficulty.

In his intermittent moments of consciousness, he had heard the conversation between the doctor and Cole. He knew he was sick. He also knew he might not have much time left to undo the disaster he had created.

“Ellie,” he said, his voice as rough as sandpaper, “I’m sorry.”

“I know I destroyed everything… for you… for us.”

“If… if this is the last chance I have, can you… not hate me?” He was begging. Every word drained his strength. “Don’t hate me when I’m dying.”

Ellie gazed at him. In her intelligent eyes, which he had once admired so much, there was only a calm abyss.

After a long time, she spoke.

“Until your family arrives, I’ll stay.”

She saw a faint spark of hope in his eyes.

Then she crushed it.

“But Rhett, we were over a long time ago.”

Perhaps from the moment three years ago when he had chosen betrayal for the sake of an heir, everything between them had already died.

She had just waited too long to bury it.
