He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 38

The bathroom door clicked shut. Soon, the sound of running water filled the silence.

Cole stood outside, his mind flashing with images he shouldn’t be having. He cursed himself under his breath.

Of course he had selfish motives.

That’s why he had never even considered taking her back to her apartment last night. He had brought her directly to his own home.

Some opportunities, if you didn’t actively seize them, would just slip away again.

By the time he set breakfast on the table, Ellie still hadn’t come out.

Cole picked up his phone and saw an iMessage from Rhett.

*Did you lie to me? Ellie isn’t here. I’ve been waiting outside for hours.*

Cole’s mouth curved into a cold smile. He replied with a single sentence.

*Maybe she’s avoiding you.*

He considered blocking Rhett’s number but then thought better of it. The man might still be useful.

Thousands of miles away in Texas, the Walker Group’s board was in an uproar.

They had learned that Rhett, in order to find a woman, had not only abandoned his post but had also authorized the transfer of exploration rights to a core oil field in exchange for an address from Cole Hayes.

The entire board was furious.

“Remove Rhett Walker as CEO immediately.”

“He must be held responsible for all losses.”

To placate the enraged directors, Old Mr. Walker had no choice but to step in, even promising to yield some of the family’s interests to other shareholders.

He called Rhett again and again, but there was no answer.

Just as he was about to despair, his phone vibrated with a message.

*I came to find Ellie. I’ll bring her back.*

Seeing those words, Old Mr. Walker’s vision went black. A sharp pain shot through his chest, and he nearly collapsed.
