He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 28

Daisy’s words struck Rhett like a physical blow.

The photos. The business secrets leaked to Cole Hayes.

Besides a business rival, the only person with the ability, the motive, and the intimate knowledge of where to strike was Ellie.

His heart sank.

A possibility he had never dared to consider, yet one that was entirely logical, pierced his mind like an icicle.

He had only just realized it.

Rhett tuned out Daisy’s cries. He snatched the car keys from the table and rushed out.

“Rhett! Where are you going?” Daisy screamed behind him.

He didn’t look back.

The door slammed shut, cutting her off.

All the strength drained from Daisy’s body. She slid down the doorframe to the floor, sobbing until she could barely breathe. If she could do it all over again, she would never have fallen for Rhett Walker.

Once Rhett was gone, his silent parents took over.

They were far more decisive than their son.

The family lawyer appeared with a prepared agreement. The old butler stood by, expressionless, supervising the servants as they packed Daisy’s belongings into cheap cardboard boxes.

“The Walker family will give you an apartment in town and five hundred thousand dollars,” the butler said coldly, as if reading from a manifest. “That is sufficient. If you ever bother the young master or try to contact Beau again, we have ways of making you regret it.”

Five hundred thousand dollars.

For an ordinary girl, it was a fortune.

As hush money for the mother of a Texas tycoon’s illegitimate son, it was an insult.

But Daisy no longer cared. Her mind was filled with the image of Rhett’s back as he rushed out, never once turning around.

She picked up the pen and signed the agreement.

Then she lifted her tear-streaked face, looked at Rhett’s cold-hearted mother, and smiled.

“Even if I leave, do you really think Ellie will come back?”

“She had more of a mind of her own than any man in college. I know that better than anyone.”

“Even without me, this family may never have another woman who can replace her.”
