He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 13

Rhett woke with a jolt.

His chest was tight, a feeling that something was deeply wrong.

He opened his eyes and saw Daisy pressed against him, Beau sound asleep on her other side. This should have been the perfect picture: a complete Walker family, an heir in the house.

But the unease in his heart only grew heavier.

A ridiculous thought flashed through his mind.

If it were Ellie lying beside him, and if the child belonged to them, would it feel more complete?

He crushed the thought immediately.

Ellie’s emotions had been too unstable lately. She wasn’t fit to care for a child. His decision last night had been the right one.

With that, he got out of bed and left the room.

Downstairs was unnervingly quiet.

There was no sound of Ellie typing in the study, no aroma of the coffee she always had ready. For years, she had been the first one up, running the ranch with an almost obsessive efficiency.

Had she not gotten up yet?

Rhett walked to the guest room door. He hesitated, his hand on the knob.

He was the one who’d told Ellie to move in here.

He wondered how she had slept. In his mind, the guest room was large enough, comfortable enough. Daisy had a child; they needed more space. Giving them the master bedroom was only logical.

He didn’t think he had treated Ellie unfairly.

After a moment of self-justification, Rhett pushed the door open.

It wasn’t locked.

And it was empty.

The first thing he saw were the boxes of Ellie’s belongings, moved from the master bedroom and now piled haphazardly in a corner.

He walked in, his gaze falling on the bed.

The bedding was pristine, without a single wrinkle.

No one had slept there.
