He Wanted an AI Bride Swap? Surprise, I Swapped Husbands for Real! Chapter 06

Damian stared at the blood pooling in his palm, grabbed a tissue to press against the wound, and called his assistant.

“Find Elara Voss’s parents’ address. Bring them to me.”

He hung up and dropped the phone on the desk.

For three years, every time her parents caused trouble, she came to him.

This time wouldn’t be different.

Half an hour later, his assistant called back.

“Mr. Cross, Elara’s parents refuse to see you. They said their daughter has already reported the matter to the police and they don’t want to get involved any further.”

Damian’s brow tightened.

“They didn’t say that when they were taking my money.”

“Ms. Voss canceled the automatic payment deductions and revoked the payment authorizations. She also submitted recordings of their threats to the police. The matter is still under investigation.”

Damian shot to his feet. His chair slammed into the cabinet behind him.

“She actually filed a report?”

The assistant didn’t answer.

The tissue was soaked through. Blood seeped between his fingers.

He let go, threw the tissue in the trash, and grabbed his keys.

By the time he reached Nathan’s estate, the rain had picked up.

Damian was stopped at the wrought-iron gate. He pressed the bell several times.

Nathan’s chief of staff came out.

He held a black umbrella and passed a document envelope over the gate.

“Ms. Voss asked us to give you this.”

Damian tore it open.

On top was a statement detailing the financial transactions between us, bearing my signature, with transfer receipts attached behind it.

Any amounts that had genuinely been loans during our relationship had already been repaid directly into his personal account. My lawyer had classified and itemized the nature of every remaining transaction. I would not accept any vague or lump-sum repayment demands.

At the bottom, in my handwriting:

“We owe each other nothing.”

Raindrops landed on the corner of the page, causing the ink in the final stroke to bleed.

Damian held the papers under the umbrella, then gripped them tighter.

“Tell her to come out. She’s been so meticulous about settling every last cent. Why doesn’t she have the nerve to say it to my face?”

“Ms. Voss won’t see you.”

“Using Nathan’s money to throw in my face — does she think—”

“The repayment came from her own account.” The assistant cut him off. “Mr. Cross. Please look at the rest.”

Beneath it were hospital records. And the test results from the detox soup.

The detected component was circled in red:

Corticosteroids.

Damian’s hand stopped.

He leaned closer. His eyes moved from the results to the sample receipt date. Then he flipped back and read it again.

The date was the day at the gym.

I’d taken the bowl. Drank a sip. Then went to the bathroom.

The page trembled in his hand.

“When did she get this?”

“Before the license.”

The assistant glanced at the envelope.

“The original report has already been submitted to the police. Our lawyers will assist with any further proceedings.”

His lips moved. A moment passed before he spoke.

“Where is she? I need to talk to her.”

Security stepped forward and pried his hand off the gate.

The assistant stepped back under the umbrella and smoothed his collar.

“Mrs. Rhodes is resting. She’s not seeing visitors.”

Damian staggered back a step.

The iron gate closed in front of him. He clutched the bars as rain diluted the blood in his palm to a pale pink.

No one came out.

Back in the car, he laid the rain-soaked report across the passenger seat and called his assistant.

“Get in touch with the lawyers. I want a full explanation of that test report and every piece of evidence she submitted.”

Before the call had even ended, he sped off into the downpour, his tires hissing sharply against the wet pavement.
