I woke to a slit of light under the curtains.

My phone, off for hours, buzzed violently when I powered it on. Palm went numb.

Over a hundred missed calls.

Whitmores. Elias. Unknown numbers.

Texts flooded in.

Margaret’s voice notes started polite.

“Rosalind? Where are you? Hotel says the wedding’s canceled?”

Then edged with anger. “How could you decide alone? Without telling the family?”

Then shouting. “Relatives are here! Are you trying to humiliate us?”

I sat on the bed. Listened to the last one. Tossed the phone aside.

Bathroom. Hot water on my face.

Belatedly, I realized—

Today was my wedding day.

And I felt nothing.

Just relief. Like escaping a sinking ship.

When I emerged, the phone rang again. Unknown number.

I answered. Elias’s voice, rage barely contained.

“Rosalind. Finally.”

I paused, towel in hand.

“What do you need?”

He choked on the question.

Seconds passed before a cold laugh.

“What do I need?”

“You canceled the wedding. Blocked me. Ran off.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

That tone. Once, it made me doubt myself.

Too sensitive. Unreasonable.

Not anymore.

“Elias,” I said. “Canceled it five days ago.”

“Told you the day before yesterday I needed to talk.”

“You didn’t listen.”

A glass slammed. He remembered.

Voice dropped, but the anger remained.

“Planned this, didn’t you? Venue, emcee, dress—all canceled.”

“Watched me show up like an idiot. Enjoyed it?”

I didn’t deny it.

“A little.”

His voice spiked.

“Rosalind!”

I held the phone away. Outside, pigeons scattered.

Waited for him to finish, then brought it back.

“Not fun being the fool, is it?”

“Six months. Talking to a program. Fun for you?”

He ignored the question, indignant.

“Doesn’t justify ruining everything!”

“Relatives blocked the entrance. Mom nearly had a stroke. Celeste cried for an hour.”

Of course. Only Celeste mattered.

I hummed.

“Why’d she cry? She the bride?”

His voice darkened.

“Must you be sarcastic?”

“What’s this got to do with Celeste?”

“Fine,” I said, flat. “Nothing. As always.”

He sounded at his limit.

“Last time, Rosalind. Where are you?”

“Come back. Apologize. Tell them it was impulsive. Reschedule the wedding.”

I nearly laughed.

“Reschedule?”

“Yes,” he said, matter-of-fact. “Damage is done. Smooth things with the family first.”

“Apologize. I’ll talk to Mom for you.”

“Wedding can be redone. Your way.”

“But fix today’s mess first.”

I listened. Laughed softly.

“Elias. What makes you think I’d still marry you?”
