The rain poured harder, and horns blared nonstop.

Dexter stood there stubbornly, just as I’d once stood wavering on that rooftop.

He believed he could use his life to make the other person give in.

But I felt nothing.

“The hearing is the day after tomorrow. If you’re still alive, I hope you show up.”

I walked away without a backward glance.

He screamed after me, and when I didn’t turn, he actually threw himself into the street and got clipped by a

car. He forced himself up and called out, “Fern… I got hit. Look at me…”

I didn’t look back.

On the day of the hearing, Dexter sat in the defendant’s seat, bedraggled and defeated.

Hadley showed up too.

I laughed.

Dexter was grasping at straws.

The court ordered enforcement. The money was transferred that very day, and the houses and cars were all

transferred to my name.

The money Dexter had given Hadley was returned in full, and Hadley was ordered to pay me a hundred

thousand in damages.

Hadley flew into a rage and cursed everyone until Simon had her thrown out.

In a single moment, Dexter lost his wife, his house, and his money.

He fainted right there in the courtroom.

He wiped the sweat from his face and carefully pulled out the lottery jar I’d thrown away.

“You threw it out, but I picked it back up.”

“I hauled ten thousand bricks today and made a few hundred bucks. Go ahead and draw. If you pick me, just let me have dinner with you.”

“Are you insane? Get lost! Stay away from my wife!” Jasper knocked the cup from his hands.

It shattered on the ground.

Every single stick that spilled out was a long stick.

There wasn’t a single short one.

Dexter stood there, the light in his eyes dimming stick by stick.

“You knew all along.”

“So you never planned to choose me, just like I never planned to choose you.”

He laughed bitterly, but tears streamed down his face.
