Not long after that, I heard Julian and Dawn had broken up.

Of all his relationships,

theirs had lasted the longest.

Yet it ended with almost no warning.

Dawn found me with tears streaking her face.

“Everything had been fine. Then out of nowhere, he broke up with me,”

“I don’t understand. Why would he do that?”

I hesitated. “Could there be someone else?”

After all,

the Julian I knew had always been a player.

Falling for someone else wouldn’t have been unusual for him.

But Dawn looked hurt by the suggestion.

“No. Once we were together, he never got involved with another girl.”

She gripped my hand.

“Could you ask Mason to help me get Julian to meet with me?”

“I need him to tell me why.”

I blinked. “Don’t you know Mason?”

Why did she need me in the middle?

Dawn lowered her head. “We’ve barely talked, and we don’t follow each other. I’m afraid he won’t

do me the favor.”

I thought about it.

Then I remembered how kind Dawn had always been to me.

I couldn’t bring myself to refuse her. “Don’t cry. I’ll ask him.”

Mason rarely said no to me. Once I explained, he agreed immediately.

That same day, he personally asked Julian to meet him.

Two hours later,

I received two messages.

One was from Dawn.

[He said he has feelings for someone else and doesn’t want to keep stringing me along. Julian and I are officially over.]

The other was from Julian.

Julian and I hadn’t messaged in ages.

So when his name popped up on my screen, I almost thought I was seeing things.

His message read,

[Dawn said you asked Mason to arrange this meeting. Do you really want us back together that badly?]

I pressed my lips together. After a long moment, I typed,

[I’m sorry. I overstepped. It won’t happen again.]

He never replied.
