Ethan drove back home. He parked in the driveway.

There was a pear tree in the yard.

The first time he saw this place, he said the tree reminded him of me. He bought it on the spot.

His heart skipped.

His hands shook as he opened it.

“Ethan, congratulations. You’re going to be a dad.”

“Hard to believe, right?”

“I felt the same way when I first found out.”

“But I think we’d make good parents. So I started to get excited.”

“Okay, I won’t write too much.”

“Ethan, I hope we can walk through this together. Face this next chapter of our lives side by side.”

“Looking forward to everything with you.”

He read it again. And again.

His fingers traced every word on the page.

If none of this had happened—what would he have done when he saw this letter?

And what would I have looked like, watching him?

He couldn’t picture it.

Rain tapped against the window.

The pear blossoms swayed in the wind, petals drifting down.

Piling up like a weight on his chest.

He sat there, face buried in his hands.

And then he broke down—sobbing.
