He Tore Out My Walk-In Closet for Another Woman, So I Sold the Home and Canceled the Wedding Chapter 06

Just then, his phone rang.

Ethan looked at the screen immediately.

But the name there wasn’t mine.

It was Sophia.

He didn’t answer.

The call stopped.

A moment later, his phone rang again.

He didn’t pick up until the fifth call.

“Ethan, is Erin home? I’ve been calling her, but I can’t reach her,”

“She’s not here.”

“She’s not? Where did she go?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Sophia seemed to sense something was wrong, and her voice turned cautious.

“Did you two fight?”

“No.”

“Then…”

“She left.”

“Left? Where did she go?”

“I don’t know.”

Ethan’s voice was calm, but his patience was clearly running out.

“She canceled the dress order, called off the wedding, put the condo up for sale, and blocked me

everywhere. I don’t know where she is.”

The other end of the line stayed quiet.

Then Sophia lowered her voice.

“Ethan, don’t worry. I’ll help you find her.”

“No.”

“But…”

“I said no!”

Ethan shouted into the phone and hung up.

He went back alone to the apartment where we’d been living.

The apartment was dark.

He left it that way.

He sat on the sofa staring at his phone, then opened our message thread.

The last message was from him.

“I’m having dinner with Sophia. I’ll be back when we’re done. Don’t wait for me.”

I’d read it but never replied.

He kept scrolling.

The photos I’d sent him, pictures of dinners I’d made, and all the little details of my days I’d shared

were still there.

His replies were always the same few cold words.

“Got it.”

“We’ll talk later.”

“I’m busy.”

The doorbell rang.

Ethan got up at once and hurried to the door.

Sophia was standing outside.

She had changed into a fitted, light-colored sweater, and her blonde hair fell over her shoulders.

She looked deeply worried about him.

“God, you look terrible. Something sounded wrong with your voice earlier, so I came to check on

you.”

She started to walk in like she always did.

Ethan blocked the doorway.

“How do you know the door code?”

Sophia froze.

“You gave it to me before. What’s wrong?”

“Don’t come here again.”

“What?”

“I said don’t come here again.”

Ethan’s voice went cold.

“This is our home. Mine and Erin’s. Not yours.”

Sophia stared at him.

“Ethan, what are you talking about?”

“I’m saying I don’t want you showing up here again.”

He raised his voice.

Sophia started crying immediately.

“Why? You stopped caring about her a long time ago, didn’t you? I could tell. Now that she’s gone, aren’t you finally free?”

Ethan stared at her, then frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“You treat me so well. You even treat me better than you treat her.”

Sophia watched him expectantly, then lowered her eyes as if she felt guilty.

“You have feelings for me too, don’t you? I know Erin is my best friend, and God, I know how awful

that sounds. But we can’t control who we fall for.”

Ethan stared at her, and for the first time, he understood what she’d been trying to say all along

“I was good to you because you were her best friend. It never meant anything else.”

Sophia’s face crumpled.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why were you so good to me?”

“I told you. Because you’re her friend.”

“No…”

Sophia shook her head, her voice trembling.

“You do have feelings for me. You’re just afraid to admit it. You ran through the rain with me, me home, remembered everything I liked, and even bought me a car and a ring…”

“Enough.”

Ethan cut her off.

“I crossed lines I never should’ve crossed. I was wrong. But that doesn’t mean I love you.’

Sophia cried even harder.

“Ethan, how can you do this to me?”

“I’m sorry. I gave you the wrong idea.”

His voice was cold and final.

“Don’t come here again. I’m changing the door code right now.”

Ethan closed the door.

Sophia stayed outside and didn’t leave right away.

After a while, she crouched down in the hallway and cried.

On the other side of the door, Ethan slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

Regret finally hit him.

So did the fear that he might truly never find me again.

A long time later, he took out his phone and booked the earliest flight to San Diego.
