He Tore Out My Walk-In Closet for Another Woman, So I Sold the Home and Canceled the Wedding Chapter 04

I said nothing.

I closed the cake box, stood up, and walked away.

I’d only gone a few steps when Ethan caught up and grabbed my arm.

“Erin, it’s not what you think. She almost fell. I was just helping her.”

“You had to hold her in your arms to help her?”

I looked up at him.

Ethan faltered.

I didn’t give him a chance to keep explaining.

“You really care about Sophia. You always notice her right away. The last time we went for a walk in Discovery Park, you stared at your phone the whole time. I slipped on a wet stone step and fell, and you didn’t even notice.”

Ethan visibly tensed.

“I scraped my knee so badly I couldn’t stand up. You kept walking until you realized I wasn’t behind you anymore. Only then did you turn around and look for me.”

“I was handling something for work!”

He rushed to defend himself, as if I were the problem again.

I gave a short laugh and looked at Sophia behind him.

“What about now? You lied and said you were working late, but you went to a movie with her, just the two of you. Ethan, can I believe a single thing you say anymore?”

He said nothing.

“Erin, don’t blame Ethan.”

Sophia walked over, instantly looking hurt.

“I invited him. My company gave me two tickets, and it would’ve been a waste not to use them. Besides, I thought you didn’t like racing movies.”

She reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“I don’t like racing? Sophia, in our senior year of high school, when you wanted to see an international motorsports event, I was the one who snuck out of the school dance with you. Freshman year of college, I watched three racing movies with you the week of your birthday. And now you’re telling me you didn’t invite me because I don’t like racing, so you invited my fiancé instead? Do you even hear how ridiculous that sounds?”

Sophia fell silent.

A few seconds later, tears filled her eyes.

“Erin, please don’t be like this. I didn’t think it through, okay? I messed up. I never meant for any of this to happen. I swear I’ll never ask Ethan for anything again. I won’t contact him either. I’m sorry. This is all my fault…”

By the end, tears were running down her face.

Whatever guilt Ethan had felt vanished the moment he saw her crying.

“Erin, she already apologized. What else do you want? It was just a movie. Are you really going to keep dragging this out?”

Was it really just a movie?

He always protected her before me, noticed what she needed before he noticed me, and put her first every single time.

That was enough to tell me she’d become more important to him than I was.

I was exhausted.

We’d been together for eight years, but I was so tired I didn’t even want to argue anymore.

“Fine. I won’t ask anymore. I don’t want anything from you anymore.”

Ethan seemed surprised that I’d let it go so quickly.

He watched me for a moment, as if he’d noticed my reaction was different from usual.

But more than anything, he looked relieved that I’d stopped asking questions.

“All right, let’s drop it. Sophia barely ate anything all day, so I’m taking her to dinner. Do you want to come?”

He asked, but his tone made it clear he didn’t care how I answered.

“No. You two go.”

“Okay. Get home safe.”

He started to leave.

Two steps later, he seemed to remember something and turned back.

“By the way, the bridal shop said you canceled your wedding dress order. Did you change your mind about the dress? Are you picking a different one?”

“No. We’re not getting married.”

“Whatever you decide is fine. Wedding dresses all look the same to me anyway.”

Ethan clearly hadn’t listened.

I looked at him and smiled.

“Okay.”

When I got home, I grabbed the suitcase I’d already packed and took a cab to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

For once, Ethan came home early that evening.

The apartment was dark.

He called my name several times, but no one answered.

Eventually, he remembered the wedding dress and assumed I’d gone out to pick another one.

He sat down on the sofa and called the bridal shop.

“Hi, is Erin there trying on another dress? Did she pick one?”

There was a brief pause.

“Sir, Ms. Walker didn’t choose another dress. She canceled the order. She said the two of you aren’t getting married anymore.”
