He Took His Childhood Friend to the World Cup, Leaving Me With Their Cat Chapter 09

I shoved him back, my voice cold and detached as if speaking to a stranger.

“My parents aren’t home yet. Leave now, and don’t come back.”

“I know I messed up, Sloane, but it shouldn’t be a death sentence.”

“Please, let’s not end it like this.”

He stepped forward again, trying to pull me into his arms.

During our old fights, the moment he realized I was genuinely furious, he would use this exact move. He’d wrap his arms around me and mutter a few sweet words.

And back then, I would melt in his embrace and give in.

But now, forget his touch-just his physical proximity made my stomach turn with disgust.

I slapped him across the face.

“Barrett! I am done playing games with you!”

“Twelve years. I am completely sick of this cycle!”

“I don’t love you anymore! Take your greed somewhere else and let me go!”

His head snapped to the side from the impact. Tears spilled over his lashes as he stared at me in absolute

shock.

Those words-I don’t love you anymore-sliced deep.

Over all those years, we had screamed, fought, and slammed doors.

But I had never once said those words to him.

In a relationship, that phrase is an absolute execution.

“No, that’s impossible. You can’t just stop loving me!”

“We’ve been together since we were eighteen. We fell in love on our very first day of college.”

“You promised you’d love me forever. We were supposed to grow old together!”

I let out a harsh, amused laugh.

“You’re trying to weaponize our past against me? That only worked when I actually loved you.

“Now that I don’t, it means absolutely nothing.”

“Barrett,

I don’t even have the energy to exchange words with you anymore.”

“just want us to go our separate ways and never cross paths again.”

Despite the finality in my voice, Barrett didn’t back down. He looked terrified and entirely broken.

“I know it was my fault with Chloe, but I’ve cut her off completely. She’s out of our lives.”

“I swear to you, from now on, it’ll just be you and me.”

“I handled everything with her before I even came down here to find you.”

Watching his tears fall didn’t stir a single ounce of pity in my chest.

I just felt an overwhelming irritation at being harassed.

“You and Chloe will never be over, Barrett. And even if you were, we can’t go back.”

“Am I not speaking English?”

“You’ve always been greedy. You claimed you loved me while insisting Chloe was just a friend.”

“But for twelve years, you did everything with her that couples do.”

“You went to concerts together, drank together, traveled together, and went to the World Cup together.”

“You even took her along on your business trips. You kept a room specifically for her in our apartment.”

“Her belongings were permanently scattered in our home, and her place was basically your second house.”

“You treated me like an idiot. You lived a whole double life at her place, right down to keeping boxes of

condoms there.”

“You hid all of it from me, but God saw it. He made sure we broke up before signing that marriage license.”

“This is mercy.”

Barrett broke down into violent sobs. He raised his hands and began slapping himself across the face, showing no mercy to his own skin.

“I messed up! Just give me one last chance for the sake of our twelve years, please!”

“I can’t survive without you, Sloane. I just want to fix this.”

“Chloe is moving overseas. She’s probably never coming back.”

“I even cut ties with my parents just so I could come here to be with you.
