After the show ended, a staff member handed me a note.

“Ms. Parker, a Mr. Hart said he’d like to see you.”

I looked at the phone number on the paper but did not take it right away.

Evan placed the car keys in my palm.

“See him if you want to.”

“If you don’t, I’ll turn him down for you.”

I looked up at him.

“Aren’t you afraid?”

He smiled, his eyes full of sincerity and concern.

“I’m only afraid someone will hurt you.”

“I’m not afraid you’ll go back to him.”

I held the car keys as a sharp ache passed through my chest.

I used to be terrified that Julian would misunderstand me.

I was afraid he would say I was making a scene or being difficult, so I would spend forever explaining why I was hurt.

Now, someone trusted me before I had explained anything at all.

Julian had asked to meet by the river.

The willows were only beginning to turn green, and their branches brushed softly against the railing in the wind.

He was sitting on a bench.

The moment he saw me, he stood. He started to reach for me, then stopped with his hand suspended in the air.

“Chloe.”

I stopped in front of him.

“What did you want?”

He held out a box. Inside was the pair of wedding champagne flutes.

“I found them and brought them back.”

“Chloe, I know I was wrong.”

I glanced at the box but did not take it.

“Once something has been thrown away, there’s no reason to bring it back.”

Julian’s fingers tightened sharply around the box.

“What about me?”

I looked past him.

“I don’t want you back either.”

His eyes immediately turned red.

“Chloe, I don’t see Sabrina anymore.”

I brought my gaze back to his face.

“Would you have come to your senses if she hadn’t chosen someone else again?”

Julian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I gave a faint smile and adjusted the strap of my purse.

“Julian, you didn’t suddenly fall in love with me.”

“You only realized that no one was waiting for you anymore.”

He instinctively stepped closer and reached for me.

“I can change.”

“I can make it up to you.”

I shook my head.

“A seven-year relationship isn’t something you can fix once it’s broken.”

Julian reached for my arm.

Evan hurried over from nearby and stepped between us.

“Mr. Hart, let her go.”

Julian looked at him.

Evan gently draped my coat over my shoulders.

I leaned against him, closing the last bit of space between us.

Julian slowly released me.

Just then, his phone rang.

Sabrina’s name flashed across the screen.

He did not answer.

The call ended, then started again almost immediately.

He ignored it a second time.

I raised an eyebrow.

“See?”

“You’re still drinking from the same bitter cup.”

Then I turned and walked away.

Evan stayed beside me, lowering his head to adjust my scarf.

“It’s windy. Let’s go home.”

I nodded.

Behind us, Julian stood beneath the willow tree while his phone rang again and again.

He did not answer once.
