He Thought I Loved Him, I Only Loved His Face Chapter 18

His friends tried to stop him. Rowan ripped the IV out of his hand.

He drove straight to Piper’s place. Didn’t remember the drive.

He got out of the car. Piper was standing at the door.

She thought he’d come to grovel. She pressed herself toward him.

“Rowan, you were so cruel to me last time. If you don’t apologize properly, I’m not forgiving you.”

He stared at her familiar face. The videos flashed through his head.

He couldn’t hold back. He swung.

The slap cracked through the air.

Piper crashed to the ground. Her pale cheek swelled red instantly.

Her eyes went wide with disbelief. Tears flooded her voice.

“Rowan. Why did you hit me?”

Seeing her act wounded made him sick.

He threw the phone at her feet. His eyes were ice.

The corner of the phone caught her forehead.

She cried out from the pain. Picked up the phone, trembling.

She saw what was on the screen. Every hair on her body stood up.

“Rowan. I can explain. I didn’t mean to send Maya those things. I was just too in love with you. And jealous. Jealous she got to marry you.”

“And you didn’t love her anyway. So what’s wrong with what I did?”

The words were gasoline on an open flame.

Rowan tapped a video. Played it in front of her face.

Piper knew exactly what it was.

She flung the phone away in terror.

Her mind raced. She scrambled for an explanation.

“Rowan. That wasn’t the real me. You know that. I had no money back then. I had to survive. I had no choice.”

“You have to believe me.”

She crawled toward him. Grabbed his pant leg. Begged.

Rowan looked down at her. His voice came out frozen.

“Piper Lane. You disgust me.”

Hearing him call her disgusting, Piper cracked. A wild laugh burst out of her.

She gave up. Let the mask fall completely.

“And what are you? Some kind of saint? I’m not the only reason Maya left.”

“You’re just regretting it now, aren’t you? Too bad. She figured you out a long time ago. A man who can never make up his mind.”

Her sharp words rang through the room.

It detonated the last of Rowan’s control.

He lunged at her. Wrapped his hands around her throat. Squeezed.

Piper clawed at his hands, nails raking bloody lines across his skin.

Rowan didn’t feel a thing. His grip only tightened.

Her face went from red to blue to purple.

Just as she thought she would die, his friends burst in. Their faces went white. They pulled her free.

Cold air rushed into her throat. She coughed violently.

Rowan surged forward again. Mad. Feral.

His friends held him back with everything they had.

“Rowan! Get a grip! Don’t ruin yourself for trash like her.”

“The priority is finding Maya. We have a lead on her.”

Those words stopped him.

He shot one last look at Piper, crumpled on the floor. His voice was colder than death.

“Get her out of here. Lock her up. I never want to see her again.”

Piper dragged herself to his feet, agony wracking her body.

“Please. Let me go. I swear I’ll never bother you and Maya again.”

Hearing Maya’s name from her mouth made him kick her away.

His friends didn’t dare say a word. They hauled her to the car.
