The doctor assumed it was a lovers’ quarrel and rushed to mediate. “Please don’t fight. Your wife’s condition—”

Maya sat up and cut him off.

“Doctor, can you give us a few minutes?”

The doctor hesitated, then nodded and left.

Rowan fixed his eyes on her. “The doctor mentioned your abdomen. What’s wrong with your abdomen?”

Maya brushed it aside. “Nothing. Scrapes from the fall.”

Rowan’s jaw tightened. His voice stayed cold.

“If you hadn’t attacked Piper, you wouldn’t have fallen down those stairs.”

“This is your fault. You need to apologize to Piper.”

Maya shook her head. “I didn’t do anything wrong. Why would I apologize? The restaurant has security footage. Go watch it. You’ll see the truth.”

Rowan’s face darkened further.

“I don’t need to watch anything. I believe Piper. You will apologize.”

After everything she’d just been through, Maya was exhausted beyond words.

She just wanted to protect her pregnancy. She didn’t want to fight him anymore.

“If I apologize, will you leave me alone?”

Something flickered across Rowan’s face at the sound of her worn-down voice.

He nodded.

Maya said nothing else. She got up and walked to Piper’s hospital room.

She looked at Piper and spoke calmly. “I’m sorry.”

She turned to Rowan.

“Satisfied?”

She didn’t wait for an answer. She walked out and left him standing there, his expression rigid and unreadable.

During the days she stayed in the hospital, the nurses couldn’t stop talking about Rowan. How attentive he was to Piper. How devoted.

Piper’s injury wasn’t even serious, and he still hired the best specialists in New York to watch over her.

When she wanted to eat, he fed her himself.

When she needed the bathroom, he carried her to the door.

Maya ignored all of it. She focused entirely on her recovery.

The day she was discharged, the doctor ran her final checks and told her the baby was healthy.

Maya touched her belly and asked the doctor a question.

“If a child is fathered by an identical twin brother—could the child still strongly resemble the other twin?”

The doctor paused. “It depends on genetics. If the paternal genes are dominant, it’s possible.”

She never expected the child to replace Caleb. She just wanted to see a trace of him. A shadow of his face. Just a little. That was enough.

Maya exhaled, thanked the doctor, and left.

She walked out of the hospital entrance and ran straight into Piper, who was being discharged the same day.

Rowan was right beside her.

Piper saw Maya and immediately slipped back into her innocent mask.

“Maya, I’ve let the past go. We can still be friends.”

“To celebrate my recovery, Rowan booked a private banquet room at that members-only club in Soho. You should come.”

Before Maya could refuse, Piper grabbed her arm and pulled her into the car.

At the club, their social circle was already gathered.

All night, Rowan doted on Piper without pause.

He peeled fruit for her. He deflected drinks on her behalf. He draped his jacket over her legs to keep her warm.

Everyone watched, envious.

Maya, meanwhile, barely glanced their way.

Later, someone suggested Truth or Dare.

Maya lost a round.

Every time Piper lost, Rowan drank for her.

Maya knew perfectly well that Rowan would never do the same for her. Not in front of all these people.

She picked Truth.

Someone glanced at Piper with a sly grin and asked, “Is the person you love in this room right now?”

Maya didn’t look up. She took a calm sip of juice.

“No.”
