He Thought I Came For Money, But Got My Last Words Chapter 07

Jason woke up in the hospital, an IV still taped to his hand.

The memories came crashing back. He shot up, ripping the needle out.

“Where is she? Where’s Emily!” His voice was raw, a scream.

Chris and a lawyer walked in. Their faces were serious.

“Mrs. Mitchell is in the morgue. The coroner ruled it a suicide,” Chris said quietly. “We need a family member to sign…”

“I’m her husband! I’ll sign! I’m taking her home!”

Jason tried to get out of bed, struggling against them.

The lawyer handed him a file folder. “Mr. Mitchell, there are some things you need to see.”

It was everything he had asked Chris to dig up before he left.

Jason opened it with shaking hands.

Inside were reports, bank statements, and copies of medical records.

Black-and-white proof.

It showed how Sophia had intercepted messages and faked evidence that Emily was a con artist.

It included Emily’s father’s real medical records and showed how hard he had worked to raise his daughter alone.

Emily’s medical records after her diagnosis, with the doctors’ notes growing increasingly serious.

As Jason read each page, his face grew paler.

By the end, he could barely hold the papers.

“Sophia.” He hissed the name through his teeth, full of hate. “I’m going to destroy her.”

His voice was shattered, like broken ice. “I’m going to make sure she suffers.”

After Chris and the lawyer left, Jason sat alone in the hospital room.

He picked up Emily’s medical records. His thumb traced the words “late-stage bone cancer.” The pain in his chest was suffocating.

He opened a hidden photo album on his phone, protected by the password of their wedding anniversary.

Inside were pictures he had secretly taken of Emily.

Her profile as she cooked, her face while she slept, her smiling at him in the sun.

And old, silly photos from their dating days.

He looked at each one as tears fell silently down his face.

He had promised to take care of her forever, and he had broken that promise.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Jason curled up like a child and sobbed openly.

He got up, washed his face, and looked at the broken man in the mirror.

The old Jason, the one who had been so full of life, was dead.

What was left was just an empty shell, hollowed out by regret.

He put on a suit and fixed his tie.

He looked put together.

But the man in the mirror was a walking corpse.

That night, he went to Sophia’s penthouse.

Sophia was dressed up in a silk slip dress, her hair perfect. Candles and a bottle of red wine sat on the table.

She smiled when she saw him.

Jason had no energy left for games. He walked past her, sat down, and threw the file folder on the table.

Sophia picked it up, confused, and her face went white after just one look.

“Jason, this is fake! Someone is trying to set me up!”

Jason grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him.

“Do you want me to make it public that you paid off the hospital to change her records? Do you want me to plaster those Venmo notifications and every cruel thing you typed all over town?”

“No! I did it because I love you! Emily wasn’t good enough for you!”

“Do you know how much people laughed at me after you broke our engagement for her?”

Sophia finally broke down. She started crying hysterically, like she was letting out all the pent-up hurt from those years.

But she didn’t know that Jason didn’t care about her tears now, he hated her.

“Love me?” Jason shoved her away and wiped his hand in disgust. “You don’t even deserve to say that word.”

“Your ‘love’ is setting up an innocent woman and watching me destroy the person I loved most?”

“Destroy?” Sophia froze. “Emily… she’s dead?”

The hatred in his eyes was so fierce, so deep, that a chill went down Sophia’s spine.

He knew everything. Thinking back to how crazy Jason had been for Emily, Sophia felt a wave of terror.

She didn’t understand. She had done this whole scheme with his parents. It had been almost perfect, Jason had believed it for years.

So why did it all fall apart in one night?

“Jason, I’m sorry! Please, think about how we grew up together! I’ll disappear. Just please don’t sue me!”

“The day you started scheming against Emily, the day you and my parents lied to me, was the day we stopped being anything but enemies.”

Jason walked to the door. With his back to her, his voice was icy.

“The lawyer’s letter comes tomorrow. Fraud, defamation, embezzlement, multiple charges, enough for years in prison.”

“All your assets, including this penthouse you bought with my money, will be frozen and sold for restitution.”

“Everything you did, I will make sure every single person you know, your whole family, your whole social circle, knows about it.”

“Get ready, Sophia. I am going to use every bit of my power to destroy you.”

He opened the door and walked out without looking back.

“No! Jason, you can’t do this to me!” Sophia’s screams were shrill, desperate. “What are you doing? We grew up together!”

She wanted to run after him, but fear rooted her to the spot.

The look in Jason’s eyes was that of a dead man. And when he looked at her, there was nothing but hate.

It had all happened so fast. Just yesterday, he had been kind to her. Today, he was her executioner.

The elevator doors closed, cutting off the sound.

There was no satisfaction, just a deeper, darker emptiness.

Revenge wouldn’t bring his Emily back.

Jason went to the morgue, signed the papers, had Emily’s body cremated, and brought her home.

He threw out every trace of Sophia and rearranged everything the way Emily had liked it.

He put her urn on the nightstand in their bedroom, next to the tin box of love letters and her medical records.

He slept in the guest room, leaving the master bedroom just as it had been when she left.

He started working like crazy and drinking like crazy.

When he was sober, he numbed himself with work. When he was drunk, he found a sick kind of peace holding her urn.

He read everything about bone cancer, funded research, and started a charity in Emily’s and her father’s names.

But none of it helped. The guilt inside him didn’t get even a little bit lighter.

Sophia was convicted, her name was ruined, and her family fell apart.

He heard she wasn’t doing well in prison, but Jason didn’t care.

Every late night, he would wake up from a nightmare or a blackout, reaching for her in the cold, empty bed.

The regret and loneliness would drown him all over again.

Jason, too late, felt another wave of unbearable pain wash over him.

Tears blurred his eyes.

But now, even if he killed Sophia and his parents with his bare hands, it wouldn’t change anything.

His Emily was never coming back.
