He Skipped Our Wedding License 10 Times but Married My Bestie Chapter 01

After graduating high school, I failed to get into college and ended up with the school bully who had been chasing me. Our life was tight but happy.

Meanwhile, my best friend married the mysterious heir to the Frost family in Boston, living like a pampered princess.

Once, she complained about her boss being mean and wanting to quit. The company went bankrupt the next day.

While I haggled with vendors to save pennies, she got a million-dollar oceanfront mansion just because her husband failed to wish her a happy birthday exactly at midnight.

Their fairytale romance took the internet by storm.

Everyone envied her luck.

I did too, but without jealousy.

And then, when my fiancé, Derrick Frost, and I were about to get our marriage license for the tenth time, he claimed his old enemies had tracked him down again and disappeared for the whole day.

At the same time, my best friend’s Instagram updated.

[He said his debt to her is paid. From now on, I’m his only love.]

The photo showed her fingers intertwined with the Frost heir.

And on the man’s index finger was the wedding ring I had designed myself.

“Come on, give me a discount. I buy from you all the time!”

“Nevaeh, you look like a decent girl, but you haggle over pennies every single time. Watch out, or your man will dump you one day.”

Embarrassment flashed through my eyes. I grabbed a few onions, waving my hand dismissively. “Fine. Just throw in the onions and keep the change.”

Before I could walk away, a curse echoed behind me. “Broke bitch. Wearing nice clothes with no money to her name—probably stole them.”

Old hag. She was the one shorting me on the scale every time.

I wanted to snap back, but a sudden thought crossed my mind, and my lips curled into a smile.

Whatever. Today was the day Derrick and I were finally getting our marriage license.

I wouldn’t lower myself to her level.

So magnanimous of me.

But the next second, my smile collapsed.

“Nevaeh, I don’t think I can make it. Can we do this another day?”

Derrick rambled on over the phone.

He said he ran into his old rivals on the way and needed to hide out for a few days.

He told me to take care of myself and promised to cook me a nice meal when he got back.

Finally, his voice faded into the wind.

I couldn’t hear a thing, just felt utterly exhausted.

All the disappointment I’d swallowed down, time and again, came crashing over me all at once.

For a moment, my hands and feet went numb, and I couldn’t breathe.

“Nevaeh? Are you listening?” Sensing my silence, Derrick’s worried voice came through the receiver.

My fingers tightened around the phone, my voice thick with exhaustion. “Derrick, this is the tenth time you’ve stood me up because of your enemies.”

“I’m sorry… Nevaeh, it’s my fault. I’m useless. I can’t even give you a stable life. I’m such a failure. I promise I’ll make it back today.”

Before I could reply, the line went dead.

Right then, a notification popped up on my screen: [Siren_S just posted a new update.]

Siren_S was my best friend, Saylor Chair, an influencer with millions of followers.

We had a pact that whenever she posted, I had to be the first to like it to claim my title as her ride-or-die bestie.

I tapped the notification.

Saylor was holding a marriage certificate, smiling brightly as she leaned into a man’s chest against a luxury floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the Boston night skyline.

The caption read: [My little cupcake doesn’t owe that woman anything anymore. From now on, he’s mine and mine alone. XOXO.]

The comment section was already exploding.

[Omg, true love wins! My ship is sailing!]

[This is too sweet. I’ve watched all her videos, and she makes me believe in love again. The Frost heir spoils her so much!]

[If that toxic woman hadn’t gotten in the way, they would’ve been together a long time ago.]

I was about to hit like when my eyes caught the man in the photo.

Specifically, his hand.

Amidst the noise of the street, my world went entirely silent.

Impossible… I had to be seeing things.

With trembling fingers, I zoomed in, closer and closer, until I saw the tiny engraving of the Little Prince and the initials “DF” on the ring.

My blood froze, a piercing chill rushing through my limbs.

A horrifying realization spread through my mind.

This matching set of Little Prince and Rose rings was designed by me because when Derrick proposed, he told me, “Nevaeh, there are many roses in the world, but I only want you.”

So, I had commissioned this specific design.

It was the only one in the world.

Lost in thought, my finger accidentally tapped the like button on Saylor’s post.

By the time I realized it, it was too late to undo.

The next second, Saylor’s call came through. “Nevaeh! You finally remembered your bestie.”

“My boyfriend… wait, husband now. He finally agreed to marry me. I’m officially Mrs. Frost.”

I forced a smile, my voice dry. “Congratulations. You finally got what you wanted.”

“Nevaeh, what’s wrong? Did Derrick upset you again? I’ll come over right now and…”

I cut her off. “No, I just have a cold. My voice is a little raspy.”

Hearing that, Saylor didn’t press further and began sharing her usual stories about her billionaire husband.

She mentioned how last week, he found out her elevator broke down, and, worried she’d be scared of the dark, walked out on a multi-million-dollar contract just to walk her downstairs.

He remembered her cycle, always stocking his car with ginger tea and hand warmers ahead of time.

Saylor said the most moving thing he ever did was immediately arranging the best hospital and top specialists when her mother fell ill.

Suddenly remembering something, she said happily, “Derrick mentioned you guys were getting your license today, too. Lucky him.”

“I’m coming over tonight. We’re celebrating, and we’re getting wasted.”

Before I could decline, she hung up.

I stood frozen on the street, watching the crowd pass by, having no idea where to go.

It felt like a hole had been ripped in my chest, letting the cold wind howl through, making me shiver with pain.

The traffic lights shifted from red to green, then back to red.

I forced myself together and stepped onto the crosswalk just as a motorcycle roared past.

Unable to dodge in time, muddy water splashed all over me.

I froze. My white dress was ruined instantly, dark stains dripping from my hair and face. A complete mess.

The new dress I bought specifically for today was ruined, stained and splotched—just like my relationship with Derrick.

“Idiot! Watch where you’re going! Want to get killed?”

I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Tears streamed down my face, and I began to sob like a child.

Over a few onions, I was called a broke bitch.

Just crossing the street, I was called an idiot.

I looked up at the two people on the bike who showed zero remorse, wiped the muddy water and tears from my face, and screamed back with everything I had.

“What are you looking at? Running to your own funeral? Shut up and drive your piece of shit bike!”

My voice cracked with tears, but it came out fierce—the kind of fierce that meant I had nothing left to lose.

“You crazy bitch, you…” The driver tried to snap back, but his confidence wavered.

“What? If you have the guts, run me over!”

I tore into them until they had nothing left to say. They muttered something under their breath and slunk off on their bike.

What a lousy day.
