He Set Rules for Me but Broke Them All for Her Chapter 07

He Set Rules for Me but Broke Them All for Her Chapter 07

Soren’s car slowly pulled away.

Only then did Remy step out from the shadows, his face as black as thunder.

“Marnie. I never agreed to this breakup, and you’re already lining up the next guy?” He glanced at the lisianthus in my hand. “That desperate already? You even took his flowers?”

I pulled my hand back and let out a cold laugh. “Remy, breaking up doesn’t require your consent And whether I take his flowers has nothing to do with you. Move.”

He grabbed my arm, harder than I expected.

A beat. Then he seemed to find his nerve.

His voice dropped, turning almost bitter. “Marnie, we’ve been together five years. Can you just think about this? Don’t do anything rash.”

“When I got home this afternoon, I went over everything in my head. And I realized whatever changed with you started that night at the beach.”

“The hotel… I can explain that. Nothing happened. She forgot her keys. I couldn’t just leave her out there alone and she’s your best friend.”

I shook him off. “I don’t need your explanation. I don’t want to hear it.”

I walked into the building.

His voice trailed off behind me, swallowed by the dark. He stood there, motionless.

That explanation came too late. So late I’d already stopped expecting anything from him. But here it

was anyway.

The hallway was quiet, the lights on.

I took a deep breath and blocked both his number and Cora’s.

“Marnie!”

Remy hadn’t left. He stood downstairs calling my name.

My mom was on the window seat in her bedroom. She could hear him. “Marnie, how did Remy our place? Do you need me to go talk to him?”

All these years, she’d always felt like she’d failed me, always guilty, always overcompensating.

I put my hand on her wrist. “Don’t worry, Mom. I can handle it.”

She smiled and told me to get some sleep.

Then she seemed to remember something, pulling the blanket up. “Soren said you two have been getting along. He’s a good kid. If you’re open to it, give him a chance.”

She rambled on. “He actually reached out to me first. Anyway, go to bed.”

I blinked, not quite processing, but she’d already shut the door gently.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Soren. Just a single line.

[Goodnight.]

I smiled and replied: [Goodnight.]

Then I switched off the bedside lamp.

That night, I slept better than I had in weeks. When I woke, I stretched and realized I had plenty of

time.

Mom had made breakfast. “Slow down, don’t choke!” she called, laughing.

I grabbed a croissant, nodded, and snagged a carton of milk on my way out.

Downstairs, Remy was still there.

Same clothes as last night. He’d stayed the whole time.

I walked straight past without looking. He called out. “Marnie”

Overnight, stubble had ringed his lips. His voice was eager, almost pleading.

He held up his phone-a screenshot showing he’d deleted Cora’s contact.

“I’ve been thinking all night. Finally figured out what I did wrong. I’ve gotten way too close to

Cora.”

“I’ve already told her everything, and I’ll fix it. All these years I’ve been arrogant. Thought no

matter what, you’d never leave. I never learned how to say it out loud.

“Marnie, I’ve got you in my heart. It’s you I love. These days without you, I can’t stand staying in that empty house!”

He stumbled through it all, like a kid begging for candy, glancing up every few seconds to read my

face.
