Three years after I moved to England, I threw myself into my studies and became an assistant professor. 

Right before my graduation, my mentor came to drink with

“I went back home a few days ago. Guess who I saw?” 

“Who?” 

“Your cheating ex.” 

My mentor was furious. “That bastard found me and acted all 

heartbroken.” 

I was completely calm when I heard his name. “He looked for you?” 

“He looked for every single one of your college and 

grad–school friends. But you told us not to say anything, and your family kept it quiet. He had no chance. He was completely 

obsessed.” 

I clinked my glass against hers. “I don’t care about him 

anymore.” 

“He doesn’t deserve it. Before I left, he even made me bring 

you a wedding dress. Said he’s still waiting for you. Ridiculous. 

Who asked him to wait?” 

I shrugged. “It’s all in the past.” 

I didn’t waste time feeling bitter that the ending didn’t match 

the journey. 

No pain lasts forever. No heartbreak is permanent. 

I’d let go completely. 

“He snuck this into my bag anyway. So sneaky!” 

I took it. It was the scrapbook I’d made Jaxon put together. 

It was filled with photos of us–from strangers to lovers. 

Every moment of our relationship was recorded there. 

On the last page, his strong handwriting. Chloe Carter, I love 

you. 

My mentor saw it and panicked. “Wait, you’re not actually moved, are you?” 

I closed the book and threw it in the trash. 

“Why would I be? If I cried over that, all my growth these past years would be a joke.” 

My mentor sighed in relief. “Oh, but there is something you might care about.” 

From her, I heard Lila’s story. It had been all over the news. She’d been caught cheating as a mistress and beaten publicly. 

She tried to clear her name with a livestream. 

But more dirt came out. She’d been a home–wrecker before. 

Her old posts about crushing on Jaxon were exposed. 

Her “secret love diary” backfired. Everyone hated her. 

“Homewrecker! This makes my chest hurt!” 

“I can’t believe people make cheating sound so pure.” 

“Confessing right before his wedding? Giving him her first time? Insane.” 

“If I were his fiancée, I’d beat her up too.” 

“The girl’s trash, but the guy’s not innocent either. If he’d set boundaries, none of this would’ve happened.” 

Everyone waited for the ending. Someone leaked that the bride 

had run away on the wedding day. 

The groom had searched the entire city for his missing bride. 

He’d lost his mind. 

People online called it karma. 

My mentor said. “I hope you never have to see those two 

losers again.”
