He Sent Me a Blanket but Hugged His Intern in Bed Chapter 04

The ambulance took forever.

The snow was too heavy, the roads were iced over, and traffic was barely moving.

I slumped against a stone pillar outside the hotel entrance, feeling warm liquid streaming down my legs with every contraction.

Each wave of pain felt like a sledgehammer slamming into my lower back. I was shaking, and sweat soaked through my sweater.

A hotel security guard spotted me and rushed over.

“Ma’am, are you all right? Should I go inside and find your family?”

I bit my lip so hard that I tasted blood.

“No,” I gasped. “I don’t have family here.”

Fifteen minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The paramedics lifted me onto a stretcher, and we sped toward Fairhaven General with the sirens wailing.

The ER was chaos—snow-related injuries had flooded the ward. The doctor who examined me took one look and went pale.

“Placental abruption. Massive hemorrhage. Get her into surgery now! Call the OB attending down here!”

A nurse rushed to my bedside with a stack of forms.

“Ma’am, where’s your next of kin? We need a signature immediately. Without it, we can’t operate. You and the baby are both at risk.”

My vision was starting to blur.

Through the haze, I heard a familiar voice from across the hall.

“Easy, Doc. She’s squeamish about blood.”

Spencer.

I turned my head, straining to see.

At the entrance to the emergency treatment bay, Spencer was carefully guiding Amber by the elbow. Her left index finger was wrapped in gauze, and tears still clung to her lashes.

“It hurts so much, Mr. Cole.”

“Cutting yourself with a fruit knife—you’re hopeless,” he said with a tenderness I hadn’t heard in years. “Don’t worry. I’m right here.”

They were less than sixty feet away.

The nurse followed my gaze.

“Is that your husband? I’ll go get him!”

“No.”

I grabbed her wrist with what little strength I had left.

“He’s not.”

The nurse’s face twisted with frustration.

“Then what do we do? If we need to remove your uterus to save your life, we can’t operate without a legal signature!”

Uterus removal.

The words hit me like a thunderbolt.

Tears finally broke free.

“I’ll sign.”

I let go of the nurse and reached for the pen.

“Natalie, are you out of your mind?”

A furious voice cut through the room.
