He Sent a Fake to Scare Me Off, I Ended Up Feeding Him for Months Chapter 13

Chase had watched the whole thing when I rescued Elias.

He never mentioned it, though. Over the next few days, he kept coming to see me as if nothing had

happened.

I felt a little awkward about it and planned to find a chance to talk things through with him.

Before I could, a friend overseas suddenly sent me a video.

[Savvy, isn’t Chase Whitmore your fiancé? Is this guy talking about him?]

I opened the video. It had been filmed inside a crowded bar overseas, and Mason was speaking, loudly over the noise.

“Want to hear something hilarious? Chase had me convince her that Elias was him because he

wanted to get rid of that fiancée of his from the sticks.”

“Then, by some bullshit twist of fate, the idiot fell for the fiancée he’d never even met.”

“Now he’s trying to win her over, so he practically banished me overseas.”

“Whatever. I’m taking one for the team. Anything for my boy’s happiness.”

So that was what had happened.

Every strange detail finally made sense.

Oddly enough, my first reaction wasn’t hurt. It was relief.

I was grateful that the person I’d mistaken for Chase had been Elias.

I turned off my phone and poked his arm with my pen.

Since I hated sitting in direct sunlight, Elias had taken the window seat. Afternoon light streamed through the glass, outlining his profile in gold.

“What is it?” He put down his pen and turned toward me, giving even the smallest thing his full

attention.

I studied him carefully.

He’d filled out a little, and it made him even more handsome. Taking care of him had clearly paid

off.

“My dad’s in Westbridge.”

I kept my voice low and got exactly the reaction I wanted when panic flashed across Elias’s face.

Dad had come to end my engagement.

Our families rarely saw each other, but the engagement had tied us together for years, and plenty of

people knew about it. It was only right to make the breakup official.

Fortunately, our families had never liked each other much, so ending the engagement didn’t take

long.

By the time Chase found out, it was already over.

I heard that he raced home that day and arrived just as Dad was leaving the Whitmore estate.

For the first time in his life, the proud and arrogant Chase begged someone for a favor.

“Mr. Brooks, please give me another chance.”

I didn’t know what Dad said to him. When I saw him afterward, he was pacing with his hands behind

his back and grumbling furiously.

“What a joke. He thinks my baby girl isn’t good enough for him? Well, I don’t think much of the

Whitmores’ son either. That scrawny beanpole looks like a stiff breeze could knock him over.”

At the time, Dad had decided that no guy my age would ever be good enough for me.

Then he spotted Elias standing beside me.

His eyes narrowed, and he pointed at Elias as if handing down a sentence.

“Don’t stand so close to her!”

Elias was so intimidated that he barely dared approach Dad for years afterward.

Chase came to see me later.

“You like Elias? He has nothing on me.”

“Does he even know what one of your handbags costs? What do you see in a broke guy like him? You and I come from the same world. Elias doesn’t belong in it.”

He didn’t sound angry or jealous. He spoke calmly, as if he were merely stating an obvious fact.

I smiled. “I thought you were going to apologize.”

Only then did Chase press his lips together.

“It was a misunderstanding. I didn’t mean for it to happen.”

I finally understood. Maybe he was simply incapable of admitting when he was wrong.

Or maybe he didn’t see any reason to apologize because my forgiveness had never mattered to him.

I looked at him seriously.

“I’m rich, Chase. Very rich. If I want an expensive bag, I can buy it myself. I don’t need to find á man

who can afford one and marry him.”

“If I lose my money someday, I’ll buy cheaper bags. No matter what happens, I know I’ll be fine.”

“I like Elias. Even if all Elias can afford is the cheapest bag in the store, I’ll treasure it because it

came from him.”

“I’m not angry that you lied to me, because your lie never mattered. You fooled me once, but I lost nothing because of it. But someone who toys with people the way you do won’t stop after one time.”

“That part of you will follow you for the rest of your life. Honestly, I feel sorry for you.”

Chase never bothered me again.

Whenever I saw him at school, he had a different girlfriend beside him.

After graduation, I heard he’d gone overseas for college.
