He Sent a Fake to Scare Me Off, I Ended Up Feeding Him for Months Chapter 07

By the time I reached Elias’s family’s burger stand, he had clearly been beaten. Blood was seeping from the corner of his mouth.

I’d heard that his father had left behind a mountain of gambling debt before he died.

Sometimes the debt collectors showed up at Elias’s house.

If he couldn’t pay, they would camp out there for days, eating his food and refusing to leave.

Sometimes they even came to school and demanded money from him in front of everyone.

The debt had belonged to his father, so Elias had no legal obligation to repay it. That was why they

resorted to threats, intimidation, and constant harassment to squeeze money out of him.

When the scar-faced man saw me, he sneered.

“Well, look at that. You got yourself a girlfriend? I knew you were spending your money somewhere. Otherwise, why can’t you come up with five grand?”

He reached down to yank Elias up, but I moved first and kicked him squarely in the groin.

I might not have looked intimidating, but Dad had worried about me getting hurt since I was little and made me take taekwondo lessons. I was skinny, but stronger than I looked.

I grabbed his wrist and locked my grip around it. He yelped and tried to wrench himself free, but my grip didn’t budge.

“You little bitch…”

“Go ahead. Keep yelling. The cops are already on their way.”

I’d called 911 before I arrived.

A second later, sirens sounded in the distance.

The debt collectors scattered, but the man in my grip wasn’t going anywhere.

It was well past midnight when Elias and I left the police station.

Elias had already paid off a large portion of his father’s debt over the years.

With interest, the remaining balance came to thirty-five thousand dollars. To put an end to the

harassment for good, I quietly paid it off.

“Does it still hurt?” I pointed to his cheek. Five deep finger marks stood out against his pale skin, and the entire side of his face was badly swollen.

Elias shook his head. After walking for a while, he stopped and looked up at the night sky.

I followed his gaze.

“Tell me something.” He held out his hand, palm facing upward. “The moonlight is so bright and beautiful. Why would it shine on someone like me?”

I tipped my head back and threw my arms wide.

“Wow, you’re right. I didn’t realize how huge it was tonight. It looks like one giant pancake. Do you want pancakes, Elias? I’m hungry.”

Elias kept his eyes on me. Then he smiled softly and nodded.

We didn’t have pancakes that night.

We ended up sharing another fully loaded house burger and a basket of fries at Elias’s stand.
