He Sent a Fake to Scare Me Off, I Ended Up Feeding Him for Months Chapter 04

Elias left work ten minutes early and insisted on walking me home. Before we parted, he also slipped a set of notes he’d made into my backpack.

Dad had bought me a house in Hawthorne Hills before I moved to Westbridge.

Ever since Mom died, he’d been incredibly overprotective.

He’d originally planned to put work aside and move here with me, but I’d talked him out of it.

In the end, he carefully chose a housekeeper to stay with me while I attended school.

As we approached the gated community, I quickly steered Elias down another street where the houses were more modest.

His family had lost everything. Seeing rows of mansions might remind him of what they used to have.

“This is me!” I pointed to a random house, then hurried him along. “You should get home too.”

Elias looked up at the house before reaching over and lightly patting the top of my head.

“See you tomorrow, partner.”

Anyone who knew Elias would’ve seen the change.

For once, he seemed to come alive. The usual heaviness was gone, as though tomorrow had finally given him something to look forward to.

The moment he left, I ran back toward Hawthorne Hills.

I was moving so fast that I nearly collided with someone as I rounded the corner near my house. The boy reacted quickly and caught me with one hand before I could fall.

I looked up into a strikingly handsome face.

Why did he seem so familiar?

Then it hit me. He looked a little like Elias.

But why was he staring at me like that?

I waved a hand in front of his face. “Hey, I’m fine. You can let go now.”

He blinked and immediately released me. “Sorry.”

I didn’t think much of it. I nodded and started walking away.

Behind me, he suddenly called out, “Do you go to Westbridge…”

Before he could finish, my dog came racing out to greet me.

I ran happily toward my dog and forgot all about the stranger.

Chase stood frozen as he watched the girl scoop up her dog and disappear around the corner. By the time he snapped out of it and went after her, she was long gone.

He opened his group chat.

[Does anyone know a tall girl at our school with long hair, huge round eyes, and a tiny beauty mark near the tip of her nose? Has anyone seen her?]

Someone immediately replied:

[What happened? Where’d you meet the new girl? Was it love at first sight?]

[Don’t be ridiculous. Chase’s standards are insane. He isn’t even interested in the prettiest girl at school, and you think he fell for some stranger at first sight?]

Chase propped his feet on the coffee table and stared at the words “love at first sight” for a long time.

[Cut the crap. Have you seen her or not?]

[I’ve seen girls with long hair, girls with big eyes, and tall girls, but never that exact combination.]

[We’ll scout the school tomorrow. If she goes to Westbridge, she can’t stay hidden for long.]

Chase typed back lazily: [Find her, and I’ll make it worth your while.]

Chase had grown up rich and handsome, so confidence came naturally to him. He had never failed to get anything he wanted, and it had never occurred to him that this time might be different.
