Looking into her eyes, which held none of the old emotion for him, he fell silent.

The people around them had started to whisper.

Finally, he spoke, his voice strained.

“Lena, I’m sorry.”

Lena was visibly stunned.

She could hardly believe that Wyatt would say that to her, here, in front of everyone.

“I came here today to tell you that.”

“I shouldn’t have misunderstood you. I shouldn’t have believed her. And I never should have let you take the blame for what she did. You had every right to be angry with me.”

Over the past month, Wyatt had done a lot of thinking.

His initial anger at not being able to find her had given way to shock when he saw her name in the paper, which had then curdled into an overwhelming regret after he learned the truth from Hank.

He finally understood why Lena had left.
