He crouched slightly, bringing his eyes level with hers.

“Are you okay?” he asked softly. “I saw you inside. You looked pale.”

Lena froze for a moment.

She was surprised anyone had noticed her in the packed stands.

After a few seconds of hesitation, she took the hot cocoa.

“Thank you.”

Warmth seeped into her cold fingers.

She took a sip, and the sweetness calmed the churning in her stomach.

Only when some color had returned to her face did the man stand up, a relaxed smile touching his lips.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen someone watch a rodeo like it was a horror movie.”

The joke wasn’t overdone.

It landed just right.

Lena’s frayed nerves loosened a bit, and she managed a faint smile.

“It just brought back some bad memories,” she said quietly.

The man nodded, but didn’t press for details.

That perfect restraint put her at ease.

She took a deep breath, finally feeling steady again.

She straightened up and gave him a small nod.

“Thank you for the hot cocoa. I’m feeling much better. I should get back.”

She didn’t want to get drawn into a conversation with a stranger, especially not after her embarrassing display.

But as she turned, the man called out.

“Wait.”

Lena looked back.

He took a step forward, stopping a comfortable distance away. His gaze was open and direct.

“My name is Logan. I work for an agricultural construction company.” He tilted his head toward the distant lights across Red Creek River. “I heard there’s a major project getting started over there. Maybe we could exchange numbers and talk sometime?”
