He Scorned Me, Now I’m a CEO He Can’t Afford Chapter 13

That sentence hit him like a thunderclap, dragging another memory with it—one he had dismissed as a joke.

It had been a bonfire night during the cowboy festival.

Lena had worn a sequined dress that was completely out of place, her smile bright and reckless.

She had snatched the beer from his hand, taken a sip, and looked up at him.

“Wyatt, if I can double Red Creek Ranch’s profits, will you merge Rattlesnake with it and let me be the lady of the manor?”

How had he answered?

He’d laughed in her face and pushed her away.

“Learn to tell alfalfa from timothy grass before you start daydreaming, Lena.”

So it hadn’t been a dream.

Everything she had said was true.

A confusing wave of emotion washed over him.

First came anger.

Anger that she had never explained, that she had let him go on thinking she was a fool, worrying she couldn’t even handle community college.

But beneath the anger was an excitement he couldn’t explain.

He thought of the girl everyone believed was just a party girl, secretly holding enough ambition and skill to reshape this entire county.

He thought of how she hadn’t been playing games.

She had been dead serious about building an empire.

Wyatt abruptly stood up.

Clara flinched and reached for him.

“Wyatt, where are you going?”

“Home.”

He shook off her hand, forcing down the unnamed agitation churning in his gut, and walked out of the office without a backward glance.

When he returned to his empty house, he couldn’t resist pulling out his phone.

The cowboys’ group chat had blown up. Countless people were tagging Lena, asking about her plan. But her profile picture remained gray. She hadn’t responded.
