He Scored My Life A 4 And Hers A 10 Chapter 06

Sloane’s crying stopped instantly.

Derek stood frozen, his brain struggling to process the words.

“Attempted murder? I didn’t do anything!”

Sloane scrambled behind Derek, but an officer grabbed her arm.

She wailed, reaching for him.

“Derek, help me!”

For a split second, he almost stepped in front of her.

Then a thought clicked.

He turned to the officers, desperate.

“Did Laurel file the report?”

“Officers, this is all a misunderstanding. Laurel’s my wife. She had a miscarriage recently, and

she’s not in a good place mentally. She’s upset with me and taking it out on everyone around me.”

“Do you know where Laurel is? Let me talk to her.”

The officer gave him an odd look.

“We can’t disclose the identity of the reporting party. But if you really are Ms. Morgan’s husband, then you should know the victim is her mother.”

“We have both witness testimony and physical evidence. This isn’t some domestic spat. Don’t treat

a human life like a joke.”

The color vanished from Derek’s face.

Three days ago, Laurel’s desperate pleas for her mother’s surgery echoed in his ears.

A horrifying possibility began to form in his mind.

He turned to Sloane, his jaw tight.

“Did you bring food to Laurel’s mother three days ago?”

Sloane cowered under his gaze but still tried to deny it.

“I-I just wanted to visit. She was sick, so I made her a home-cooked meal. I never meant to hurt

anyone!”

“What did you make?”

“Pork roast…”

The officer added, “Specifically, a pork roast braised in a heavy amount of bourbon.”

Derek’s expression shifted into something raw and furious.

“Everyone knows patients can’t consume alcohol. Laurel’s mother has a heart condition and a

severe alcohol allergy!”

“You did this on purpose.”

He ripped his sleeve from Sloane’s grip.

“I’m not helping you. Deal with it yourself.”

He turned back to the officers, asking for Laurel’s whereabouts, not sparing Sloane another glance.

Something inside Sloane snapped.

She screamed after him, raw and broken.

“Derek, how can you be so cold?”

“You abandoned Laurel when she miscarried-for me! You gave me her baby’s nursery-for my dogs! You let her mother nearly die-for me!”

“I’ve always been your first choice. Your perfect ten. You can’t leave me!”

But Derek didn’t look back.

Guilt and regret crashed over him in waves.

Every moment from the past few days replayed in his mind.

He’d thought Laurel was being dramatic.

So he’d ignored her breakdowns. Clung to his precious scoring system.

He’d convinced himself he was protecting the marriage.

But he was the one destroying it.

He’d abandoned her when she needed him most.

And when her mother was dying, he’d done nothing.

He couldn’t even imagine how she’d managed to pay for the surgery with frozen accounts.

He didn’t have the courage to go to the hospital to see if his mother-in-law had survived.

All he could do now was cooperate fully with the investigation.

And try to atone for the damage he’d done.

A month later, Sloane was convicted.

Derek never visited her.

The review group flooded with messages begging him to help Sloane, to stop chasing Laurel.

He deleted the group chat. He threw his scoring system in the trash where it belonged.

He’d finally learned not to measure everything with numbers.

But six years of mistakes couldn’t be undone.

He’d already lost everything that mattered.

The marriage was over.

He just didn’t know how to let go.
