He Saw My Ghost All Along, And Grew Tired Of My Clinging Chapter 13

He Saw My Ghost All Along, And Grew Tired Of My Clinging Chapter 13

My grip tightened on the phone. I turned the screen so he could see.

[Stay away from Reid, or I’ll make you regret it!]

Just one line. But the cold that crawled through me had nothing to do with the temperature.

“Two days. We’ve been back together for two days, and someone already knows. This isn’t some

random stalker.”

Reid’s fist clenched at his side. His jaw locked so tight I could see the muscle jump.

“They threatened you. In my house. They’re dead.”

“So what do we do?”

Whoever this was, they were invisible. We couldn’t defend against someone we couldn’t see.

And finding them wouldn’t happen overnight.

Reid sat down next to me and pulled me close.

“I might have something. Give me a few days to set it up.”

Itrusted him.

“Okay. I’m with you.”

I drank the glass of warm milk the maid had brought up before bed and lay down, planning to stay

up talking. But my head got heavier and heavier, and I was out before I knew it.

I didn’t wake up until noon the next day.

It was his day off, but he’d left a note: [Had to run to the office. Take it easy.]

I smiled at his handwriting.

I got ready and headed downstairs. Scout was already waiting.

The housekeeper called me in.

“Breakfast is ready.”

I sat down at the table. Before I could take a single bite, Scout launched himself at me, barking, and knocked my plate to the floor.

I stared at the ruined sandwich on the tiles, then down at Scout.

“What’s gotten into you, buddy? Hungry? Let me eat first. Then it’s your turn.”

He wouldn’t stop. He grabbed my sleeve in his teeth and pulled, trying to drag me away from the

table.

I didn’t understand, but my appetite was gone anyway. I let him lead me outside.

I was sitting in the backyard with Scout in my lap, soaking up the sun, when Reid’s voice came from

behind me.

“I heard a certain someone destroyed your breakfast. You still haven’t eaten?”

I squinted up at him and shrugged.

“Scout tackled my sandwich. But honestly, I’m not even hungry. I’m just… tired. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

I yawned mid–sentence.

Reid’s smile faded.

“You’ve been sleeping more and more. Is anything else off? Headaches? Nausea?”

I thought about it.

“Dizzy sometimes. That’s it. Maybe this body’s just not used to having me in it yet?”

Reid held my hand. He didn’t say anything for a long moment.

“Something doesn’t feel right. Let me take you in for a checkup tomorrow. Just to be safe.”

I thought he was overthinking it. But he wasn’t wrong. Knowing for sure would put both our minds

at ease.

“Okay. Let’s go.”

The next morning, I skipped breakfast. Reid drove me to the hospital; and I went through a full

workup.

He’d pulled strings to rush the results. We had them before we left.

The doctor looked at the report for a long time. Then he looked at me. The expression on his face

made my stomach drop.

“Everything’s fine, right?”

The doctor exhaled.

“Your bloodwork shows a slow–acting toxin in your system.”

The room tilted.

Reid’s hand crushed mine. His skin was freezing.

“I knew it. How much is in her system?”

“I’d suggest looking closely at what you’ve been eating and drinking at home. Someone may have. been adding something.”

He wasn’t guessing. He was certain.

“The drowsiness and the headaches aren’t fatigue. They’re symptoms. Something is being. introduced into your system, and it’s been building up rapidly over the last few days.‘

My lungs tightened. I forced myself to breathe.

“Okay. Thank you, Doctor.”

Outside, the sun was bright and warm. I couldn’t stop shaking.

I couldn’t figure out where the gap was.

I’d been careful. I’d been watching. And someone still got to me.
