Adrian Cole’s throat moved, but he couldn’t say a word.

The doctor tapped the desk.

“The patient needs rest now.”

“Whatever conflict exists between the family members must stay outside the room.”

“And do not allow anyone who might upset him to visit.”

I nodded. “Understood.”

When we left the office, my father was propped up in bed.

He still forced himself to ask,

“What did the doctor say?”

I walked over and tucked the blanket around him.

“He said you need to sleep.”

My father looked at Adrian Cole, then slowly turned his head away.

Adrian Cole stood at the foot of the bed. “Mr. Bennett, I’m sorry.”

My father closed his eyes.

“Don’t say it to me.”

“I’m too old to hear any more of this.”

Adrian Cole’s eyes reddened instantly.

His phone chose that moment to ring.

Vanessa Reed’s tearful voice spilled through the speaker.

“Adrian, I’m downstairs at the hospital.”

“I want to see Mr. Bennett.”

“I’m terrified something will happen to him because of me.”

“I know Claire doesn’t want to see me, but I truly care about her.”

Adrian Cole’s expression changed.

I looked up at him.

“Did you ask her to come?”

“No.”

He answered immediately.

“I had no idea she’d show up.”

Another voice message appeared.

“Adrian, can you come downstairs?”

“I won’t go up.”

“I only need to know that Mr. Bennett is okay.”

“And I need to explain myself to you.”

Adrian Cole stood still with the phone in his hand.

“She’s already downstairs.”

“I’m afraid she’ll come up and upset your father.”

“I’ll go down and make her leave.”

I smiled without speaking.

He looked at me as if he still wanted to explain.

Then another call came from downstairs.

In the end, he turned and left.

My mother stood in the doorway and quietly closed her eyes.

My father never opened his.

He only whispered, “Claire, stop waiting for him.”

My throat burned.

“I will.”

After Adrian Cole escorted Vanessa Reed away downstairs, he sat in his car and opened the company group chat.

His fingers hovered for a long time before he finally sent a message.

“Claire Bennett never bullied anyone.”

“The cat was a lie, and Vanessa Reed and I hid the truth first.”

“I abused my position by interfering with her transfer and resignation because of a personal relationship. That was professional misconduct.”

“All gossip about this ends now.”

The group chat went silent instantly.
