Graham and Sloane waited outside the Hawthorne Manuscript Institute for four days.

The first two days, he kept sending messages through the staff.

I sent word back that if he didn’t stop, I’d call security.

On the fourth afternoon, I walked out of a project meeting and saw them at the bottom of the steps.

Graham looked haggard. The ground around his feet was covered in cigarette butts.

Sloane came to me first.

“Laurel, I went too far. The wedding, the cemetery, all of it.”

“Just come home with him.”

She reached for my shoulder. I stepped back.

She didn’t miss a beat.

“He was miserable the whole trip.”

“There was only one bed in the suite. He took the couch and stared at your pictures all night.”

“My leg cramped while we were diving and he carried me all the way back to the boat.”

“He was soaking wet and the only thing he wanted to know was whether you were still mad.”

She meant it as proof that Graham still cared.

But every word reminded me that they’d shared my honeymoon suite. Slept in the bed I’d picked out. Used the things I’d packed.

I cut her off.

“I don’t need to hear about where you slept or how many times he held you.”

Sloane’s smile faltered.

Graham closed the distance and caught my arm.

“Come home with me. I’m not signing those papers.”

Graham’s mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I stepped around him. He grabbed me again.

One of my colleagues stepped between us.

“Mr. Whitlock, she said no.”

“You need to back off.”

Graham watched me move behind another man. Something dangerous moved across his face.

“This is between me and my wife.”

I pulled free. “There’s nothing left between us.”

That night, Graham waited outside my building until past midnight.

When I came back, the cigarette butts had piled up again and his voice was nearly gone.

“Laurel, you really won’t give me one more chance?”

I stopped.

“Graham, you made your choices. Don’t stand out here begging. It’s pathetic.”

Graham stood there in the dark, saying nothing.

The next day, he flew back to Ashbourne alone.

Before his flight took off, I sent one last message.

[Sign the papers when you get home.]

Then I blocked his number.

This time, I didn’t leave him any way back.
