He Said It Was A Bet, I Made It His Last One Chapter 05

“Good.”

Tamsin crossed her arms.

“Maybe she’ll remember this next time she thinks about hitting me.”

Then she turned to Callum.

“What should I spend the money on?”

She perked up.

“What about that trip you promised me?”

For the first time, Callum didn’t answer her immediately.

He’d been frowning ever since I’d ended the call.

At the mention of spending the money, he pulled his hand away from hers.

“That’s Maren’s savings.”

His voice hardened.

“It’s not yours to blow.”

Tamsin stared at him.

“But you just said it was compensation for me.”

She pouted.

“You don’t keep your promises.”

“I don’t like you anymore.”

Normally, the second she said something like that, Callum would soften his tone and keep placating her until

she smiled again.

Not this time.

“If it were my money, I’d let you spend it however you wanted.”

“But it’s Maren’s.”

His jaw tightened.

“When she comes back and apologizes, I’m returning it.”

Tamsin realized the sulking wasn’t working and quieted down.

After a moment, she asked, “What if she doesn’t come today?”

Callum paused.

Then he seemed to make up his mind.

“She will.”

He waited all afternoon and into the evening.

Tamsin complained more than once that she was hungry, but the hospital room stayed quiet.

No one came.

Tamsin finally frowned.

“She’s obviously not coming.”

“She’s gone. She’s not planning to apologize.”

She smiled.

“So I guess the money really is mine.”

“Can we go eat now? My blood sugar is dropping.”

Callum finally snapped.

“Even if she doesn’t come, the money still isn’t yours!”

“If you hadn’t slipped mustard into her food on purpose, she wouldn’t have slapped you.”

“You caused this yourself.”

Already hungry and irritated, Tamsin snapped.

“How is this all my fault?”

She glared at him.

“You’re the one who told me she was allergic to mustard.”

“If you hadn’t told me, I never would’ve thought of it.”

“And you knew what I was planning!”

“You didn’t stop me.”

Her voice rose.

“Now something happened, and suddenly you’re blaming me?”

“Where was all this concern earlier?”

Callum went still.

For the first time, his certainty seemed to crack.

“You’re right.”

His voice was quiet.

“I was wrong.”

He pulled out his phone and called me.

No answer.

His messages didn’t go through either.

I’d blocked him.

Tamsin leaned over to check his screen, then smiled.

“She blocked you.”

Her tone was almost cheerful.

“Maybe she figured forty-five grand was worth paying to get rid of you.”

Callum’s face darkened.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“She’s angry. That’s why she’s ignoring me.”

Then some of the tension left his face.

“That money is everything she’s saved. There’s no way she’d just walk away from it.”

He sounded like he was trying to convince himself.

“In a few days, she’ll calm down and come apologize.”

“Come on.”

He stood.

“Let’s get you something to eat.”

Tamsin pouted.

“You yelled at me because of Maren again.”

“So you have to take me to the most expensive steakhouse in Bellweather.”

“Otherwise, I’m not forgiving you.”

Callum finally smiled.

“Fine. You pick the place.”

They were still talking and laughing when his phone rang, before they’d even made it out of the hospital.

Tamsin grinned.

“See? It hasn’t even been that long. She already cracked.”

But the second Callum answered, the smile disappeared from his face.
