He Said I Was Unphotogenic Yet My Photos Shocked The Entire School Chapter 08

On final selection day, all five shorts were screened in the school auditorium.

Claire sat in the front row in a light blue sundress, Jason beside her with his camera.

Before, they’d always looked like the obvious stars.

Claire was pretty. Jason documented her being pretty. I usually stood to the side holding their things.

This time, I sat in the candidates’ section, my palms still sweating.

Derek sat in the last row of the audience. He texted me: [Stop looking at the screen. You already did the work. Now it’s about others seeing you.]

The first short was Claire’s. Jason’s shooting was polished.

She stood on the maple tree avenue, by the lake, and in front of the science building, sunny, sweet, well-composed.

Applause followed. Someone whispered, “Claire’s still the right face for this. She just has that campus look.”

I heard it. But I didn’t lower my head.

The screen went dark. Then my piece started.

It didn’t open with my face. It opened with the library steps at 6 a.m. Then my back, walking up with books. My voice began slowly.

“When I first came here, I always felt ordinary, so ordinary that standing in a crowd, I was like a photo no one would ever look twice at.”

The footage moved to the field, the science building, the alumni wall. No forced smiles. No flashy moves. Just me walking every path of this campus.

Finally, I stood at the main gate, looking into the lens.

“Later, I learned that being ordinary doesn’t mean you have no light. It just means you need more time to learn not to shrink away.”

The auditorium went quiet. I heard my own heartbeat. When the video ended, applause began sparse, then swelled.

The admissions coordinator took a long time writing her notes. During the Q&A, a judge asked, “Why do you want to be the admissions ambassador?”

I stood. In the past, I’d have looked at Jason first. But this time, I faced the judge.

“Because I want to tell students who haven’t arrived yet. Not everyone who shines starts out bright. Some people grow into their own light here.”

The room paused, then another wave of applause followed.

When the results came up, I gripped the edges of my sleeves. The big screen lit.

Admissions Ambassador Finalist: Emma Calloway.

Best Campus Story Short: Emma Calloway.

When my name appeared, my eyes suddenly burned.

Claire sat in front, the color slowly draining from her face. Jason stared at the screen like he was seeing my name for the first time.

Derek stood in the back row and raised his camera briefly. He didn’t shoot. He just smiled.

I stood on stage holding my certificate and remembered those two photos from graduation day. One with my eyes closed. One with my face sliced by shadow.

Back then, I thought I wasn’t worth a proper shot. But now, I was seen, not because someone graciously pressed a shutter, but because I finally stopped dodging the frame.
