By the time Garrett reached the hotel, the reception was over.

Weston and I were already in the car, ready to leave.

The car moved forward.

Garrett chased us for two steps.

In the mirror, he stood with one arm outstretched, reaching for something already beyond him.

I leaned back against the seat.

A small box of wedding favors still rested in my lap.

Then it hit me.

From the moment he pounded on the window to the moment we pulled away, I had not said a single word to him.

I had not lowered the window to tell him to go.

I always gave him a way back.

Even the last time both families pushed for a wedding date and he brushed them off, I had at least said, “Stop pushing. I’ll do it.”

This time, I left him nothing.

Weston glanced at me and switched to a softer song.
