He stood there as if someone had nailed his shoes to the floor.

“Okay. Be angry. But don’t say things you don’t mean.”

“Stay with your parents for a few days if you need space. I’ll come get you after my mother’s

birthday.”

“And the families already think the date is set. Someone has to explain that we’re not ready. Just back me up and tell them you need more time.”

He offered me an easy way back into our old routine.

I did not take it.

The elevator carried me down through the city lights.
