With twenty minutes to go until six o’clock, Brooke’s hair and makeup were finally done.

But Ethan still hadn’t come down from the upstairs lounge.

After a moment’s hesitation, Brooke walked over.

The lounge door was unlocked.

Faint voices drifted from inside.

Brooke moved closer, listening.

“Ethan, are you sure Ava isn’t coming back?”

“If she was coming, she’d be here by now. At this point, even a private jet couldn’t get her here in time.”

“Ethan, I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while.”

“Do you really not have any feelings for Ava?”

“You grew up together. She’s beautiful and innocent, and she only has eyes for you.”

Brooke held her breath.

The room went silent for a long moment.

Then, Ethan’s voice, slow and measured.

“No.”

“Would you have feelings for a high school student?”

He let out a soft, dismissive scoff.

He was five years older than Ava.

When she first came to the Whitmore house, she was only in second grade.

Even later, when she grew up and became so beautiful it was hard to look away.

For some reason, Ethan’s mind flashed back to prom night.

He must have been out of his mind.

That was the only explanation for why he had let her tempt him until his head was spinning and he’d kissed her.

And accepted that brooch.

“But Ava really is beautiful now.”

“Yeah, a few of my friends are interested in her.”

“Remember that equestrian competition last year?”

“Of course. She wore that dark blue riding uniform and took first place.”

“I still remember the way she took off her helmet on the podium. Her smile was so bright…”

Of course Ethan remembered.
