When Ethan reached the front gate, he didn’t see Ava.

Only her custom, pale blue car was parked quietly by the curb.

The person standing beside it was her best friend, Mia.

Ethan stopped short.

It felt like something had tugged at his heart, pulling it down into his stomach.

Only then did he remember.

Before Ava left Los Angeles, she had given the car to Mia.

Mia saw him and walked over immediately.

He noticed a white envelope in her hand.

Her face was a blank mask as she got straight to the point.

“This is from Ava. A wedding gift for you and Brooke.”

Ethan didn’t take it.

Mia frowned. “There’s one more thing.”

“Spit it out.”

“Ava left in a hurry and didn’t get a chance to see you.”

“She called you a few times, but you never answered.”

“There’s something she needs back from you.”

“For your birthday a while back, she gave you an antique brooch.”

“It was the token her mother gave her father when they got engaged.”

Mia smiled, a hint of mockery in her eyes.

“Ava said that brooch was meant for her future husband.”

“It’s not appropriate for you to have it anymore.”

“Mr. Whitmore, could you please give it to me? I’m going to Chicago to see her soon, and I’ll take it to her.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

His gaze fell on the warm-toned tanzanite brooch pinned to his suit.

For some reason, when he was getting dressed that morning, he had chosen this one.

It didn’t even match his suit.

But he hadn’t changed it.

Now, looking at it, the thing was unbearably garish.

Meant for her future husband?

For some reason, the thought of Ava marrying someone else, of her having a husband, made his stomach churn.

She loved him.

How could she possibly marry another man?

She was getting clever, though.

Instead of coming herself, she had sent Mia to ask for the brooch.

He had to admit, it was a good move. It had unsettled him.
