He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 39

My composure seemed to enrage him more than any screaming match could have. He slammed his fist on the mantelpiece.
“You ruined us! All for some childish revenge!” he spat, his face twisted with fury. “Don’t you love me anymore?”
The question, the word “love” on his lips, made me feel physically ill. I took a step back, grabbing the velvet back of a chair for support.
“For the last three years,” I asked, a terrible suspicion taking shape in my mind, “you and Sloane… you were never just friends, were you?”
He froze. His eyes darted away.
And then, he gave a barely perceptible nod.
“Not all the time,” he rushed to clarify, as if that lessened the betrayal. “Only… when she was lonely. When she was having a breakdown. You know how she is. I couldn’t just say no.”
So that was it.
Every canceled date. Every night he didn’t come home. Every frantic call about an “emergency.”
The pieces all clicked into place, forming a single, sordid, unbearable picture.
“Do you love her?” My voice was a whisper, nearly drowned out by the blood pounding in my ears.
