He Said a Female Bestie Is Fine—So I Got a Male One Chapter 10

We filed all the paperwork A nonth later, the mandatory waiting period was up.

We walked out of the courthouse, and Ethan looked like fie was attending his own funeral.

He still wasn’t ready to let go. He begged me for another chance, said he’d do anything to make up for it,

said he loved me.

His tall frame was hunched over like the weight of the world was crushing him. What started as pleading turned into desperate, clinging attempts to keep me there.

We were so caught up in the messy, painful tangle of it all that neither of us noticed we had drifted into the

street.

And neither of us saw the red BMW that was barreling straight toward me.

BANG!

Everything happened in a blur.

By the time my brain registered what was happening, Ethan had already thrown himself in front of me and

his body was flying through the air like a rag doll.

It was like watching a scene from a movie, frozen in slow motion.

The last thing he said, right before the impact, was a single, choked word.

“I’m sorry.”

My heart seized in my chest. The sound of his body hitting the pavement snapped me back to reality.

I rushed toward him.

At that same moment, Chloe came flying out of the passenger side of the BMW. When she saw it was Ethan lying broken on the asphalt and not me, she let out a guttural, human scream.

She shrieked that I should be dead and lunged at me with a knife.

Before she could get close, a nearby patrol officer slammed her onto the hood of the car and wrenched the

blade from her hand.

“Grace Miller, why won’t you just die?” she howled, her face twisted with madness. “This is all your fault! They all turned their backs on me because of you! It was all you! You bitch! I’ll kill you!”

Chloe had completely snapped.

The day of my surgery, Richard and Linda Cole had discovered Ethan and his whole crew of triends at Chloe’s place. They were furious.

They, along with several other influential families, had used their collective power to blacklist the Bennett

family

To save face and protect their own interests, the Bennetts had decided to make Chloe the sacrificial lamb.

They were shipping her off to another country with the understanding that she was never to set foot in Crestwood again.

And the young men who had once treated her like a precious mascot? The moment their own reputations

and family businesses were on the line, every single one of them cut her off without a second thought.

For Chloe, it was the end of her world. And in her warped, narcissistic mind, it was all my fault.

If I were gone, everything would go back to the way it was.

Listening to her rant, all I could feel was a hollow sense of the absurd.
