He Said a Female Bestie Is Fine—So I Got a Male One Chapter 05

It was eleven o’clock at night and Ethan still wasn’t home.

I didn’t bother texting hi

I had already made plans to meet up with Lucas. He and a few of his friends had gone to O’Malley’s Pub, the loudest, most packed bar in town.

The pounding music was a physical force, rattling my eardrums and making it easy to forget everything else. Our group grabbed a big booth and got comfortable, drinks flowing freely.

After a couple rounds, the person sitting next to me suddenly pointed across the bar and yelled.

“Holy shit! Look at what’s going down over there!”

Everyone’s head swiveled around, suddenly very interested.

I turned to look too.

And what do you know? A table full of familiar faces.

It was Ethan’s crew, some guys and a girl, with a table covered in bottles.

Ethan was sitting in the middle, though from this distance I couldn’t see his face clearly. His head was down

and he was messing with his phone.

Then Chloe snatched the phone right out of his hands and climbed onto his lap, straddling him and wrapping her arms around his neck, waving a bottle of beer in the air.

Everyone around them was acting like this was completely normal. Some were even standing up and

cheering them on.

The guy next to me was watching the whole scene, totally engrossed.

“Looks like they’re playing Truth or Dare,” he observed. “They must’ve dared her to feed him a shot,

mouth-to-mouth.”

“That chick is wild,” someone else said. “Dude, like two seconds ago they had her take her bra off. She just reached back, unclipped it, and hung it on the guy next to her. We’re in a bar, right? Not their fucking hotel

room.”

“Yeah, and who’s calling the shots?” someone else muttered. “The guys. We all know what they’re really after.”

Everyone at my table was laughing.

I was not.

Because I was watching Ethan, and he had put his phone down and was tilting his head back, mouth open, waiting for Chloe to lean down and pour the drink from her lips to his.

It was the most disgusting thing I’d ever seen.

Chloe never got the chance to do it.

I was already on my feet and across the room. I walked right up and slapped her so hard her head snapped to

the side.

Then I slapped him for good measure.

The scene that followed was ugly and chaotic.

Ethan’s buddies were all trying to play it off like it was just a dumb joke. Chloe was standing there, clutching

her cheek, whining that it was just part of the game.

Without a single change in my expression, I grabbed her bra, which was still hanging around some other

guy’s neck, and threw it right in her face.

Then I turned and walked away.

“You like games?” I said over my shoulder. “Wait till the divorce is final. Then you can have him.”

I meant every word.

I was just so damn tired.

But Ethan refused to accept it. He followed me home, chasing after me.

“Babe, I swear to God, it was nothing. Just a stupid game.” His voice cracked. “Chloe’s always been like that. You know that. We don’t even think of her like, she’s not a girl to us.”

“And you yelled at her, right? You got to yell at her. Look, I promise. It won’t happen again. Nothing like

that. Ever.”

Then his tone shifted to one of frustration.

“And I didn’t exactly say anything about you going to a bar with a bunch of random guys, Grace!”

His attempts at apologizing were getting more and more irritated by the second.

Finally he just grabbed a fistful of his own hair and yelled at me.

By that point I had already started packing my things.

I had a lot of stuff, and there was no way I could get it all in one go. But I couldn’t stand to be in the same

space as him for one more second.
